Housed in original black and white illustrated slipcase. Unpaginated. Twelve screenprints of ladders with on the page opposite a short text describing an attribute of a ladder. For example: "Breughel's ladders are the tongues of Babel" and "It was used by cathedral builders and in the storming of castle walls" and "In dreams and visions it may reach up to Heaven be peopled by angels". Some very slight marking to the cover and to slipcase but otherwise a fine copy. Gooding and McLean worked together on a number of artists's books including Dreamwork 1985 A Scone Off a Plate 1990 and Knife Edge Academy: The Prospectus 1992. Five 8x10 promotional Jazz drummer photos the 2 Kruppas and 1 Lewis are gelatin silver and the 2 Bellson are halftones all variously inscribed and / or signed. The signature on the Lewis photo is signed in the photos' negative and thus not "live" ink - as are the other four "live ink" autographs in this collection. The company "Long & McQuade" is the largest chain of musical instrument retailers in Canada and as we are unsure who Lou Williams Jr. & Sr. are assume that they may have been music store owners. One of the Louie Bellson photos has "March 18 / '79 at Convocation Hall / Toronto Ont." written in blue ink on the verso. All photos a touch age toned w. only minor wear. A nice collection of drummer signed photos showcasing three of Jazzdom's most legendary and time-honored players. unknown

He reflects on daily events over the course of a year his readings thoughts observations. To these statements made in language plain-spoken yet rising to the beauty and imagination of his poetry he appended further comments or interpretations to make them more intelligible to others. An essay in which Williams explains himself as a figure within the modern movement was added as a prologue. The critic Lawrence Kart claims that the great poetry Williams achieved "would not have been possible without the eruptive prose of 'Kora in Hell'." <br /> <br /> The book includes prints by contemporary artist Mel Kendrick whose own work is in the modernist lineage.
