Date uncertain: The copyright states 1893 Charles S. Sutphen. Some B&W illus of cuts of meat crockery in text. This is most likely a later printing of the cookbook first prepared for the World Columbian Exposition in Chicago to celebrate the 400th anniversary of the discovery of America by Coumbus. This exposition is usually associated with the first appearance of the Ferris Wheel but is more significantly remembered as the fair that widely introduced the wonders of electricity to the American heartland. There are monochrome plates in this book showing the major pavilions such as the Electrical Pavilion almost side by side with instructions for hand churning butter. There must be 400 or more recipes; Boiled Indian Puudding Ripe Tomato Catsup Unrivalled Minnebaba cake Beefsteak and Oysters Candies etc. Features a chapter on Carving also Dyeing recipes Household hints Suggested Menus. There is a central section which is an unconventional placement of blank pages where the previous owner has neatly written her own recipes in steel pen. The typogaphy is generously large which seems unusual for a cookbook of this era but the paper is poor and the page edges are quite browned and brittle with the edges to some preliminary blank pages quite broken up marginally. The corner tips are worn through and there is wear to the spine extemities with a 1" split both sides of the spine head. There are worm holes to the top and bottom edge of pages but the text is unaffected. Pencil recipes to rear endpaper with some notations to recipes. Covers soiled with some staining. Brown cloth decorated in green very slightly frayed at the spine head but otherwise very good. Extremely scarce. A highly important work in viticulture. For some twenty years earlier the phylloxera insect had decimated American vineyards having created equal havoc earlier in Europe. Some American vines had natural resistance to the American phylloxera insect and the book promoted hybridisation and grafting using these at first less popular cultivars. First American Edition. The commentary is lyrical amusing yet very informative. For each listing Veronelli provides a concise summary of the vinification style presumably the DOC rules and ageing and tasting observations. And third a selection of original eighty-four labels from significant wines spirits and liquors. The first significant book on Italian wine in English. Still relevant and useful today. <br /> <br /> <br /> Veronelli was an Italian gastronome wine critic self-proclaimed anarchist poet provocateur television presenter writer and publisher. One of the world's great wine intellectuals of the twentieth century Veronelli was the first and probably remains the most influential Italian wine communicator to date. He was the 'mid-wife' of many of the great Italian wines and wine estates today encouraging their establishment and promoting their output. "He can be credited with the discovery and identification of many of Italy's better producers in the late twentieth century a role which won him a group of devoted friends and an equally large group of sworn enemies mostly large commercial producers". ¹ <br /> <br /> <br /> In 1956 he established a publishing house dedicated to Italian gastronomy philosophy and politics issuing several magazines including Il Gastronomico. He also published D'Annunzio Marquis de Sade Carnacina and a range of eclectic titles. Another of the many publications of Josefina Velzquez de Leon June 7 1899 – September 21 1968. She was a Mexican cook researcher writer and teacher. as well as a pioneer of Mexican gastronomy and an entrepreneur of Mexican cuisine. One of the most well-recognized and prolific of all Mexican cookbook authors she had more than one hundred forty books to her name. The subtitle says it all my translation a "selection of authentic recipes from the regional cuisine of Chihuahua compiled by a group of ladies and gentlemen from the Marian Congregation Established by the Jesuit Fathers of the Church of the Sacred Heart of Jesus in the City of Chihuahua. Augmented with a series of modern recipes that can be made with the good products of the region." Sections include Cocina Frutas Dulces Reposteria Varios and Recetas de cocina y reposteria moderna.
