One full color illustration on upper wrapper. 8-1/2" x 5-1/2" <br/><br/>This wine list is from a dinning car owned by the Fred Harvey Company. Fred Harvey 1835 - 1901 owned around 45 restaurants along the railroad and 20 dinning cars. His restaurant legacy lasted until his gradson died in 1965. The Fred Harvey Company was the sixth largest food retailer in the United States when it sold in 1968. Stamped in blue ink on the upper wrapper is the date "Nov 21 1942". On the inside at the head it also states "For Victory Buy United States War Savings Bonds And Stamps". A sign of the times. Included in the list are California and imported wines liquor mixed drinks beer cigars/cigarettes and playing cards. Also is an extensive list of waters and juices. Fred Harvey unknown books

An early wine list from the legendary Manhattan restaurant Lutèce 1961-2004. The list opens with an introductory statement to diners from the restaurant's founder André Surmain who thanks the restaurant's seven suppliers a rare credit on modern wine lists and Alexis Lichine the author of The Wines of France. Displaying a fine selection of Bordeaux Rouges & Blancs; Bougognes Rouges; Roses Loire; Alsace Rhône; and Champagnes including Lafite Rothschild dating to the 1890s Haut Brion from the 1930s and pre-depression era Mouton. Throughout each selection lists producer as well location of the vineyard. The three Alsatian wines on the list have been credited as the primary genesis of the Alsatian wine market in the United States. Julia Child Playboy Magazine and Zagat each proclaimed Lutèce the best restaurant in the United States; the New York Times gave the restaurant four stars. Spiral bound in gilt-stamped blue wrappers. Folio: 2. 10-5/8" x 6-3/4" <br/><br/>Gabler though not listing this item does briefly discuss & list divers tracts & pamphlets written in the early 1640s voicing public outrage over a contract between Charles I and the Vintner's Company of London- under said contract the Vintners agreed to pay a 46 shilling tax on every ton of Spanish & French wine & also agreed to annually buy a certain amount from English importers. In return the vintners were permitted to sell cooked victuals a proviso not in their original charter & allowed to recoup the tax by charging a penny a quart more that the officially published price. The ultimate effect was to give the Vintners' Company a monopoly on the wine trade all the while enriching the coffers of Charles I. Needless to say wine drinkers were livid. Parliament eventually responded in the consumers' favor. Gabler pp. 2-3.
