We follow Kermit Lynch to the Northern Rhône in a chapter from his classic Adventures on the Wine Route. In an excerpt from Between Meals long-time New Yorker writer A. J. Liebling raises feeding and imbibing on a budget in Paris into something of an art form and discovers a very good rosé from just west of the Rhone. Four handwritten invoices or envoi each 21 x 13.5 cm. on stationery with the blindstamp of Normand & Duplessy Entrepot Transit & Cammoinage and with the oval ink stamp of same. Receipts for four simultaneous purchases of wine from the Bordeaux wine merchant Maison Clossman each for delivery to a different palace of Emperor Napoleon III: Palais des Tuileries Palais de L'Elysée Palais de St. Cloud Palais de Fontainebleau. The items are numbered across the four invoices in consecutive order with one hundred seven items in all. A total of one hundred seven items most large quantities in barrels or cartons of fifty bottles each. The fourth and final invoice contains an additional stamp in green ink "Maison de ill. Service de la Regie de Palais de Fontainbleu". Folded with creases. Near fine. Maison Clossman & Cie unknown books
11189Derbyshire; between 12 July 1702 and 13 January 1711. 15 pp narrow folio 14.5 x 38 cm in the remains of a volume which has been reused and cut up see below. Although aged and dogeared the eight pages carrying the accounts are in reasonable condition with all texts clear and complete although the last leaf of the eight has the lower third cut away. In remains of original vellum binding with '17 Maij j683' on front board. The pages are variously paginated in a contemporary hand between 245 and 274. Among the accounts are those of Thomas Stanhope; William Sacheverell; Samuel Chase churchwarden of Strapton; Alderman Carter; Reginald Cynder; Captain John Every; William Cavendish of Dovebridge; Mr Beaumont of Barrow; churchwardens of Feston; John Harpur; Brooke Boothby; Mr Moseley of Roulston; Samuel Orme churchwarden of Broadfall; Mr Charles Cogge of Yeildersley; Hill Francis of Derby; Henry Keys; 'ffor ye funerall of Mr James'; John Bainbrigge; 'ffor ye: funerall of Mr Sheppard'; Mr Mellor of Ashborne; 'ffor the funerall of Mr Burton of Weston July 9o: 1710:'; William Gilbert; Robert Bingham; Captain Hopkinson; William Chambers; Simon Dogg. The itemised entries include charges for 'Lisbon' 'Canary' 'wt: wine' 'french wine' 'Vinegar' 'Rhenish' 'Lemons' and 'Galetia wt: wine'. Substantial sums are spent with a couple of accounts totaling around £40 and one containing about fifty items. A great number of other pages of the volume have been cut out and the eight surviving leaves of accounts are followed by one complete leaf and three parts of leaves on which the semi-literate family of John Smith whose signature is on the back cover has recorded births and other family events between 1772 and 1821. The first entry reads 'Joseph Smith Build sic my House In the Year of our Lord 1772 Paid Mr. Ford For Bricks 16 Thousand At 18 Shillings Per Thousand £8 18s 0d Flour Bricks £1 1s 0d In Total All £40 0s 0d'. One full color illustration on upper wrapper. 8-1/2" x 5-1/2" <br/><br/>This wine list is from a dinning car owned by the Fred Harvey Company. Fred Harvey 1835 - 1901 owned around 45 restaurants along the railroad and 20 dinning cars. His restaurant legacy lasted until his gradson died in 1965. The Fred Harvey Company was the sixth largest food retailer in the United States when it sold in 1968. Stamped in blue ink on the upper wrapper is the date "Nov 21 1942". On the inside at the head it also states "For Victory Buy United States War Savings Bonds And Stamps". A sign of the times. Included in the list are California and imported wines liquor mixed drinks beer cigars/cigarettes and playing cards. Also is an extensive list of waters and juices. Fred Harvey unknown books

Selections include rare vintages from France and Italy Chateau Yquem Lur-Saluces 1924 for $8.00 as well as a couple pages of California wines. The latest vintages on the list are from 1930 the earliest is a Grand Chambertin Burgundy from 1911 $8.50. A glass of Grande Fine Champagne Napoleon 1811 can be enjoyed for $1.00 while standard cocktail fare runs .30 -.50 cents. Whiskies gins rums brandies aperitifs etc. are all on offer but no vodka! 2 pages of beers and 3 of soft drinks conclude the list. This book is the 44th Library Edition November 1984 First Issue 1960. The text is broken into three sections: Wines from the World with Fold out Maps and Photographs. Pages 1 - 517 Wines from America Pages 1901 - 2088 followed by the wine list with prices Pages 2101 - 2500. A short index follows wine list. Bern's Steak House is a steak restaurant in the SoHo district of Tampa Florida founded in 1956. It is currently owned and operated by David Laxer son of original owner Bern Laxer. The restaurant boasts the largest wine list of any restaurant in the world. In its cellars can be found depression-era French red wine pre-war Sauternes and Madeira from the 17th century. Diners can take a tour of the wine cellar as well as the kitchen after their meal. Bern's Wine Cellar is the perennial recipient of the Wine Spectator Grand Award. Another notable feature is that there is only one single window in the entire establishment although it is not viewable by customers according to Wikipedia as of June 24 2016. </p> Bern’s Steak House hardcover
