The American Grape Grower's Guide. 2nd Ed Orange Judd & Co: New York 1852. 8vo 195x130mm HC black pebbled cloth gilt lettered spine 2xii11-2044pp.</p> <p><br /> <br /> <p>CHORLTON William. circa 1812 - 1889</p> <br /> <p>The American Grape Grower's Guide intended especially for the American climate: being a practical treatise on the cultivation of the grapevine in each department of hot house cold grapery retarding house & out door culture with plans for the construction of the requisite buildings and giving the best methods of heating the same.</p> <br /> <p>New-York : Orange Judd & Company circa 1852. Second Edition. Copyright and first published 1852 by C M Saxon New York.</p> <br /> <p>Duodecimo 195x130mm original publisher's black pebbled cloth gilt lettered spine plain blind ruled and stamped decoration to boards 2xii11-2044 blankpp : 1¹² 2-8¹² 9â¸. Thirty-two wood block engraved monochrome illustrations. Corners lightly rubbed; slight fraying to tail of spine; light stains to the frontispiece and title page not affecting the text or illustration; crease to rear paste-down.<br /> <br /> ¶  There are fifteen chapters: introductory remarks; glass houses and conveniences; artificial heat and apparatus; borders or prepared beds; planting and management the first year; management for the second year and permanent treatment for the cold grapery; the early grapery or forcing house; pot culture; retarding house; list of varieties; pruning and training; propagation and the raising of new kinds; diseases; insects and how to destroy them; the vineyards and out-door culture.</p> <br /> <p>The American Grape Grower's Guide was a very popular treatise on the cultivation of grapes for table consumption both under glass and outdoors.  It was based on Chorlton's experience as gardener and horticulturist to J C Green Esq of Staten Island.  In that role Chorlton was also a several time prize winner at the New York Horticultural Exhibition for hothouse grapes.</p> <br /> <p>An early edition of a popular and practical work.<br /> <br /> § OCLC records numerous holdings this edition in the USA but none elsewhere.<br /> § Gabler 15820; Noling 105 later edition; not in Cagle or Bitting.</p> </p> Orange Judd & Co unknown
