188074379Marseille: N.p. ca. 1880. A large gathering of plant specimens from the wine growing regions of southwest France. Each specimen is mounted via paper holders to bifoliums measuring 12 1/2 x 20 inches and each specimen within a genus folder containing differing amounts of specimens. Each specimen is named in French on the front of the bifolium and and in much more detail in a small square on the bottom right of the page bearing the specimen .E.g.: Scrofularinees for Scrophulariaceae; In this folder are 3 specimens of species of this genus—— Linaria Cymbalaria; Linaria arvensis; scrofularinee aqua. All data is in French and in manuscript and gives the French translated from the Latin name of the plant the flowering season and the type of habitat and flower color if applicable. There are 15 genus folder bearing 76 actual species specimens. The specimens are on the main very large. All housed in a custom wooden slipcase with extensive brass fittings. Box measures 24 1/2 x 15 1/2 x 6 inches. No specimens broken or missing. Stock paper and chemise by Moullot Fils Ainé Marseilles. A wonderful assemblage.South West France or in French Sud-Ouest is a wine region in France covering several wine-producing areas situated respectively inland from and south of the wine region of Bordeaux. These areas which have a total of 16000 hectares 40000 acres of vineyards consist of several discontinuous wine "islands" throughout the Aquitaine region where Bordeaux region itself is situated and more or less to the west of the Midi-Pyrénées region. Thus South West France covers both the upstream areas around the rivers Dordogne and Garonne which also flow through Bordeaux where they combine to form the Gironde estuary and their tributaries as well as the wine-producing areas of Gascony including Bearn and the Northern Basque Country. However only areas closer to the Atlantic than to the Mediterranean are included in the region with the city of Toulouse being situated roughly halfway between the South West wine region and the Languedoc-Roussillon wine region on the Mediterranean. The brandy-producing region Armagnac is situated within Gascony and the wine region of South West France and some of its grapes are used to make Vin de Pays under the designation Vin de Pays de Côtes de Gascogne or mixed with Armagnac to produce the Mistelle Floc de Gascogne.South West France is a rather heterogeneous region in terms of its wines and how they are marketed. It is rare to see wines being sold as Vins du Sud-Ouest. Rather the smaller areas and individual appellations market their wines under their own smaller umbrella in contrast with common practice in e.g. the Bordeaux region. N.p. unknown

1812AQ30893St. Albans: Shaw Printer 1812. 8pp. Two bilfolia disbound. Priced in manuscript. Together with: Inventory of the Effects of Mr. Charles Williams of St. Albans not included in the printed catalogue of sale. 10th December 1812. Manuscript on paper. Single bifolium An apparently unrecorded auction catalogue annotated by the auctioneer with the prices achieved of the property of a deceased wine merchant including his 'stock in trade' lotted by bin of sherry port rum gin and 'coniac brandy'. The sale realised a total of £268. 4s. 5d. and included 51 lots of his wine stock along with a sequence of empoty casks. The manuscript addendum written on the day after the public auction adds several household as well as '21 Bottles of Currant Wine in 2 Tea Canisters'. Interestingly St. Albans possessed a novel wine licensing system established under the terms of the 1570 wine charter a model not repeated elsewhere. The borough corporation had the power to grant two licences to local vintners in return for an annual endowment of £20 remarkably to be provided to the master of St. Albans grammar school for the maintenance of the institution. We have been unable to trace Charles Williams nor locate any record of his business. However it does not seem unreasonable to assume that he held one of these much sought after licenses; certainly the auction catalogue reveals an extensive stock surely necessitated by the possession of a trade monopoly. . 8vo. Per Wikipedia Philip Morton Shand 1888 -1960 Was A British Journalist Architecture Critic An Early Proponent Of Modernism Wine And Food Writer Entrepreneur And Pomologist. He Was The Paternal Grandfather Of Queen Camilla. Shand Served In The First World War With The Royal Fusiliers Regiment56 And Immediately Afterwards Due To His Fluent French And German He Was Appointed As Superintendent Of All German Prisoners' Camps In France. Already In 1914 He Had Translated From German To English Arthur Schnitzler's Play Liebelei Under The Title Playing With Love. Shand Demonstrated His Knowledge Of Food And Wine In Articles And Books Published During The 1920S. He Set Out His Viewpoint At The Beginning Of The 300-Page A Book Of Food 1927: "This Is Frankly A Book Of Prejudices For All Food Is A Question Of Likes And Dislikes. One May Be Tolerant About Religion Politics And A Hundred And One Other Things But Not About The Food That One Eats." Though His First Major Publications From That Time Were On Food And Wine He Began To Also Build A Reputation As An Architecture Critic Working In Particular For Architectural Review Where He Had Been Influential In Steering The Journal's Then Proprietor And Sometimes Editor Hubert De Cronin Hastings In Favour Of Modernism. While Living In Lyon France In The Early 1920S He Was Invited By The Editor Of The Architectural Association Journal To Review The Exposition Internationale Des Artes Décoratifs In Paris Of 1925. In Reviewing The Exposition He Coined The Term "Swedish Grace". Shand's First Book On Architecture Modern Theatres And Cinemas Was Published In 1930 And Featured Many Of Those Buildings He Had Encountered In Germany During The Late 1920S Arguing That There The Cinema Had Emerged As A Separate Design Typology Not An Adaptation Of Traditional Theatre Design. Shand Was Befriended By Some Of The Leading Figures In European Modernist Architecture Including The German Architect Peter Behrens The Swiss-French Le Corbusier The Founder Of The Bauhaus School Walter Gropius Finnish Alvar Aalto And Swiss Historian-Critic Sigfried Giedion Keeping Correspondence With Each Of Them. He Also Developed Close Links With Architects Back In The Uk Encouraging Their Participation In The Modernist Debate. Shand Translated From German To English Gropius's 1925 Book Die Neue Architektur Und Das Bauhaus Published In 1930 As The New Architecture And The Bauhaus. Shand Together With Architects Coates Maxwell Fry And F. R. S. Yorke Were The Founding Members Of The Mars Group Modern Architectural Research Group Which Operated From 1933 To 1937. A Series Of Articles Under The Title Scenario For A Human Drama In Architectural Review Of 1934-5 Was Shand's Attempt To Document And Place The Contemporary Architecture In Europe. In Seven Parts It Set Out Ideas On The Evolution Of Continental Modernism. Aalto Would Later Tell His Biographer Göran Schildt That Due To His Military Background And Faultless German Shand Had Acted As A British Spy Behind German Lines During The War Though Shand Himself Never Made Such A Claim Elsewhere. Despite His Early Enthusiasm For Modernism In Design And Architecture By The Late 1950S He Wrote: "I Have Frightful Nightmares And No Wonder For I Am Haunted By A Gnawing Sense Of Guilt In Having In However Minor And Obscure Degree Helped To Bring About Anyhow Encouraged And Praised The Embryo Searchings That Have Now Materialized Into A Monster Neither Of Us Shand Or Betjeman Could Have Foreseen .

Alfred A. 17500001563Good. 1750. On offer is an absolutely sensational ancient original 1750s manuscript sailor's vade mecum or reference manual handwritten by and or for a mariner over 260 years ago. The name William Wine appears on the rear inside cover dated March 4th 1788. The handwriting is similar throughout to the signature but it is inconclusive if Mr. Wine is the author original owner or a later owner. The first page detached but present is dated November 1750. There are many many tables of information illustrations charts drawings etc. that are indexed and with over 420 pages written in a small meticulous hand there are within these pages everything that a mid-18th Century senior officer or mate would require being filled with geographical mathematical financial navigational and geometric information and there are also sections detailing carpenter's work joiners painters glaziers lavers masons plus foreign exchange and monetary info and conversions in foreign countries. There are sections for algebra calculus trigonometry all manners of measurement whether liquid or dry and even how to calculate the contents of a globe with many of the mathematical sections deal with measuring heights and distance from afar measuring and surveying dealing with casks all information that a Lieutenant 1st mate or Ship's Master or even a Captain would need. We conclude that the information and the quality of the manuscript book vellum which double folds and creates an envelope that would protect the pages from the elements plus a metal clasp broken give further credence that this book was owned by a senior officer and most certainly of English origin as evidenced by the section regarding Oxford and Cambridge terms plus a chart that helps one establish the dates of the Easter season leap years tides . The volume begins with a few pages of indices and in the first section one finds pages of geographical place names and distances from one to another: "the coast of Carolina Virginia etc. to Newfoundland" and the "Bohema Islands" and another "The Coast of y.e main Continent in y.e West Indies" and the degrees of longitude and latitude are listed alongside each listed place. The standard depth and sheer volume of information also leads us to conclude that the seaman was likely an officer of a merchantman as opposed to a casual traveler. This is an absolutely unique manuscript relic of ancient seafaring and the age of sail. The 7 x 4.5 x 1.5 inch book is generally soiled on the covers but the interiors are good save for the loose page and the odd stains to the inner pages. The cover is stiff somewhat fragile and has some cracks/tears but overall the book is G. ; 12mo - over 6¾" - 7¾" tall; KEYWORDS: HISTORY OF GREAT BRITAIN ENGLAND BRITANNIA RULES THE WAVES NELSON HORNBLOWER AUBREY RAMAGE REFERENCE MANUAL HANDBOOK NAVIGATION MARINE NAUTICAL NAVAL TIDES VADE MECUM SAILOR SAILING AGE OF SAIL SEVEN YEARS WAR TRAVEL ASEA SURVEYING LONGITUDE LATITUDE MATHEMATICS GEOMETRY GEOGRAPHY PORT OF CALL HARBORS SEAFARING SEAFARERS HANDWRITTEN MANUSCRIPT DOCUMENT LETTER AUTOGRAPH DIARY JOURNAL LOG KEEPSAKE WRITER HAND WRITTEN DOCUMENTS SIGNED LETTERS MANUSCRIPTS HISTORICAL HOLOGRAPH WRITERS DIARIES JOURNALS LOGS AUTOGRAPHS PERSONAL MEMOIR MEMORIAL PERSONAL HISTORYantiquité contrat vélin document manuscrit papier Antike Brief Pergament Dokument Manuskript Papier oggetto d'antiquariato atto velina documento manoscritto carta antigüedad hecho vitela documento manuscrito papel. . hardcover
