Boxed set of two Overture style magnum size wine glasses commemorating the Twenty-fifth anniversary of the U.S.-U.S.S.R. Joint Verification Experiment. The anniversary celebration was held in Nevada and the National Nuclear Security Administration's Nevada Field Office and at the test facilities accessed at Mercury Nevada. Each glass is approximately 8 inched tall and 2.5 inches at the mouth. The bowl portion is bulges to about 3.5 inches. Neither glass has been used. The Riedel box is approximately 8.25 inches high 7.25 inches long and about 3.75 inches wide. Each glass has the outline of the State of Nevada with the date 1988 on the left side the date 2013 on the right side and the initials JVE in the middle. Below this image is stated 25th Anniversary. The box states that the glasses are crystal lead Free and made in Germany. Presumably they could have been used to contain some heavy water but are not suitable for beer or ale. Box has slight wear and soiling. The United States part of the Joint Verification Experiment carried out in 1988 as the Kearsarge event in Operation Touchstone. Twenty-five years later before tensions increased between Russia and the United States a joint commemoration of the event was held at the Nevada Nuclear Security Site formerly the Nevada Test Site. JVE provided the first opportunity for scientists from US and Soviet nuclear weapons laboratories to meet and work cooperatively. At the Nevada Test Site and at the follow-on experiment at the Soviet Semipalatinsk Test Site they developed confidence-building steps that made possible the ratification of the TTBT in 1990. The objective of the JVE was to calibrate the seismic yield estimation capability of underground nuclear explosions conducted in both countries. It involved the unprecedented US yield measurement of a Soviet nuclear explosion at its then nuclear test site in Kazakhstan and the reciprocal Soviet yield measurement of a US nuclear explosion at the Nevada Test Site. In the second paragraph he gives details of '2 bills' he has drawn on the firm. The final paragraph reads: 'If Russel has deld. his contract would it not be a good opportunity to send samples to the Manchester & Liverpool Brewers' Postscript: 'The Brandy ordered in my last must be permitted in the name of Elias not Joseph Prestwich -'.
