Lawrence informs Allnutt that he has been to the British Institution 'yet tho' at an early undisturb'd hour' he was 'unable to fix on any one Picture amongst many of nearly the same merit'. His advice is: 'You must yourself choose.' He finds 'some small Works by Mr. Childe' good but 'can't determine to add to my own Collection if I may use so fine a word or I agree with you that I ought to purchase Mr. Hartstones which is an admirable head!' He is enclosing a paper not present with unimportant matter and he asks Allnutt and his wife to 'keep it as a record of my opinions on two or three subjects in art and as conveying my own genuine thoughts & Feelings on Characters that preceded me in the Chair! / The Picture that gain'd the Prize was by Mr: Hartstone who has now still more justified the Academys decision'. He invites Allnutt to call on him in Russell Square and asks him to bring 'if Mrs Allnutt can oblige me with the loan of it a light the lightest blonde Ruff for the Neck. AQ27989vs.: vs. 1820-40s An archive comprised of sixty-eight loose articles of late Georgian and early Victorian manuscript and printed ephemera relating to the purchase of alcohol including a number of bill-heads for merchants in inter alia Glasgow and London. The majority of the manuscript material - predominantly receipts and purchase orders - are addressed to Nottingham-based wine merchant Thomas Bailey 1785-1856 father of poet Philip James Bailey 1816-1902 noted author of Festus 1839. The elder Bailet who established his business in 1817 relinquished control in the 1830s in order to devote himself more fully to his roles as newspaper editor and author. The later material in this archive dating to the 1840s is addressed to Bailey's son-in-law and successor John Brown. This may be a special edition with a presentaation printed to the half-title page: "Presented by the Pan-American Coffee Bureau as a contribution by The Member Countries of the Biureau to the spread of factual knowlege about coffee". No markings hinges solid there is touch of moisture instrusion quite slight to the lower corner of the frotn endpaper and extending to about page 25 making the corner tip slightly wavy no staining otherwise about Very Good copy lacking the dust jacket. Umber cloth with gold titles map endpapers xiv 818pp index. Colour frontis showing Coffee plant colour plate showing Coffee varieties facing page 200 and colour plate showing roasted coffee facing page 243. Hundreds of B&W photos and illus in text. This book first appeared in 1922; this is the revised edition of 1935. This is really an excellent reference on the history cultivation etymology chemistry commercial merchandising of coffee. There are fascinating chapters on the coffee trade coffee in literature and Fine art coffee drinking in Paris coffee apparatus coffee customs and manners.
