1982390469San Francisco 1982. Unbound. Fine. Two photomechanically reproduced flyers measuring 8.5" x 11" and 8.5" x 14". One is on yellow paper and the other on orange. Fine with slight abrasions where they were tacked up. Two flyers protesting the incarceration of activist Peter Plate for his role in the 1979 San Francisco White Night Riots. One flyer shows a group of protesters by a damaged police car and declares "remember white night" while the other briefly explains the case against Plate under a drawing of a burning police car. The riots occurred on the night of May 21 1979 and were a result of the "lenient verdict" in the case of Dan White notorious killer of San Francisco Mayor George Moscone and San Francisco Supervisor Harvey Milk. White was only sentenced to voluntary manslaughter which outraged the citizens of San Francisco. The gay community and the police department were already at odds but White being a former officer helped to intensified what was scheduled to be a "peaceful protest" into a conflict. During the night activist Peter Plate was arrested for participating in the riots and charges were brought against him. By 1982 Plate was scheduled to stand trial for "multiple felony charges" including "assault and battery on a police officer and burning police cars." Ultimately the city targeted a few people for the actions of thousands. The flyers urge for multiple protests that year August 17th July 14th and December 19th. "The malevolence that the district attorney's office and the police department display in their desire to convict Peter Plate and his co-defendants reflects the criminal nature of law and order. unknown

73195Two pairs of albums including 227 photographs documenting the construction in 1955 of two dairy processing plants in Los Angeles California from the laying of the foundations through completion. Comprised of 88 images of the Lucerne Milk Plant and 139 of the Regal Ice Cream Company. Silver prints the images measuring 4 ½" x 6 ½" most mounted recto/verso each with a caption and nearly all with the direction photographed in the negative; 14 loose. Quarto four volumes. Original gray paper triple-pin bindings with typed paper title labels. Some toning and wear along the extremities of the bindings; otherwise very good.

Established in 1904 by dairy farmers in California's San Joaquin Valley the Lucerne brand was acquired by Safeway in 1929. According to Craig Fullmer Safeway's director of dairy supply operations "Beginning around 1930 we started acquiring fluid milk plants so we were the first retailer to have an internal supply of fresh fluid milk to our store base." To meet demand Safeway transitioned away from acquiring small bottlers and started building new plants in the late 1930s. Ice cream production began in 1951 along with the launch of Safeway's Regal brand. By 1955 Safeway operated 15 dairy plants: 12 fluid two ice cream and one cottage cheese and byproducts.

The plants depicted in these albums were constructed by J.T. Thorpe & Son Inc. between September 1955 and February 1956. Located on Boxford Avenue in what is now the City of Commerce the site is the present-day home of the Vons Milk and Bread Plant. unknown

1952S5007Rio de Janeiro:: Academia Brasileira de Ciências 1952. 1952. 271 x 186 mm. 4to. Pages 44-46. Entire volume: 71 pp. 1 tables. Printed wrappers; wrappers creased several leaves dog-eared. Very good. RARE. FIRST EDITION. "After his well known success in quantum electrodynamics Feynman was working on meson theory. He proposed to Leite Lopes that they investigate whether the pseudoscalar meson theory would give some results in the description of the deuteron which could be experimentally checked in spite of the difficulty of the 1/r3 singularity at the origin of the Yukawa potential. The results of this study were published in an article entitled 'On the pseudoscalar meson theory of the deuteron' in the proceedings of the Symposium on New Research Techniques in Physics 15-29 June 1952. Many physicists from Europe and the United States attended this symposium." Mehra. Among the contributors to this publication are Eugene Paul Wigner 1902-1995 with three papers among the total of 67.
