A good copy of this large book with some external wear. Bumping to the lower corners wear at the spine ends including a 1" tear at the base of the rear joint binding intact. Interior is clean and unmarked. The weight of this volume is not well-supported by the binding - all pages firmly bound in but lacking tightness - This is a common flaw for this title which should have been bound more securely to support the weight of text. 583 pp. filled with color and black and white examples of the prolific French artist's paintings. A beautiful collection. The Doris Louise Benz copy A fine Zaehnsdorf binding with a detailed fore-edge painting from 1925 depicting an 18th-century riverside view of Broxbourne. Traditionally fore-edge paintings did not represent subjects or scenes relevant to the books they adorned but this depiction appropriately celebrates the pastoral life characterized in Walton and Cotton's piscatorial masterpiece. The Compleat Angler was first published in 1653. Provenance: Stephen C. Massey. Duodecimo 164 x 101 mm. Engraved frontispiece and 3 plates further illustrations in text. Early 20th-century green morocco by Zaehnsdorf spine lettered in gilt compartments with gilt central tool of fly fishing hook gilt rule to spine covers and turn-ins Dahlia pattern marbled endpapers edges gilt fore edge with colour fore-edge painting by C. Wain 1925 their stamp on rear turn-in. Blue morocco book label of American philanthropist and book collector Doris Louise Benz 1907-1984. Superficial split to front inner hinge sporadic foxing a couple of neat pencil annotations a fine copy. unknown
Q1167None. Very good. Original gouache painting on panel 11.75 x 10 inches. Printed calendar for 1950 mounted beneath the image. 7.75 x 7 inches. A buff-toned panel painted white on both sides with an inset frame giving the impression of being a matted painting. Small ribbon hanging loop affixed to the top for display. A subdued but evocative still life after French painter Henri Fantin-Latour 1836-1904 renowned for his floral still lifes. Known as the "Betrothal Still Life" the original painting was completed in 1869 and has characteristically deep tones which our painter feels are lacking from this copy. A note on the back reads: "This is a copy I have made from a Fantin-Latour that I saw that time in France - I brought back a small photograph and a vivid memory so that the whole is not unlike - but it is too light in tone - a thing I cannot easily avoid in this medium." But we're actually partial to the tonal nuances in the generously laid gouache with pastel-skewing tones although fugitive pigments may also take some credit for this. Also inscribed on the back "With love and every good wish for Christmas 1949" and a pencil note "1806-1934" in the lower left corner we suspect might be a case of accidentally transposing the artist's dates 1836-1904. <br/><br/> unknown
