br. Negli affreschi sistini numerose scene o figure della storia del popolo ebraico sono presentate come origine, o prefigurazione, della storia cristiana aperta dall'Incarnazione. Il ciclo degli Antenati di Cristo, dipinto sulle lunette e sulle vele della volta, svolge un ruolo essenziale nel connettere le due «età»: l'enumerazione dei patriarchi e dei re della stirpe di Abramo si conclude, in accordo con la genealogia proposta nel Vangelo di Matteo, col nome di Giuseppe, marito di Maria e padre di Gesù. La tradizione iconografica presentava solitamente questi patriarchi come venerabili figure maschili accompagnate dai loro discendenti; Michelangelo stravolge radicalmente le consuetudini figurative accostando, nelle lunette della Sistina, ai nomi degli antenati una straordinaria serie di famiglie immerse nella vita quotidiana: donne che accudiscono i loro bambini o intente ai lavori domestici, vecchi padri pensierosi o addormentati, personaggi erranti, uomini e donne in attesa.
