Abrams did not state first or later printings during this period but we presume this is a later printing as the Abrams logo on the front panel appears to be that of ca. 1970-74. A slightly shaken copy good or better with general scuffing to the edges especially the corners. Still a crisp sound copy. In a very good dust jacket showing mild edgewear and some scrapes/abrasions to the rear panel which is typical for this title. Nevertheless a fantastic copy SIGNED boldly in purple ink by Dali and dated 1976 on the blank leaf opposite the title page. About very good; light wear and soil to wrappers; text evenly toned due to stock. Rare first and only edition of Salvador Dalí's illustrations for this communist publication by Jaume Miravitlles chairman of the Communist Workers' and Peasants' Bloc BOC. Since his studies in engineering the young Catalan was committed to the independence of his home region from Spain. After being threatened with a prison sentence for distributing leaflets he fled to Paris where he completed his studies and began to move in the circle of the Surrealists. Together with Dalí he appeared as an actor in Luis Buñuel's film "Un perro andaluz" in which he played a clergyman sitting at the piano alongside his eccentric countryman. He also had a role in "La edad de oro". After his return he joined the Catalan Communist Party. During the Civil War he served as a propaganda officer for the Generalitat de Catalunya.<br /> <br /> As of March 2025 KVK and OCLC do not list any copy worldwide. unknown

Self-aggrandizing and partly invented the memoir is a well-written and highly entertaining addition to the Western canon. Analysant l’œuvre de Jean-François Millet à coup d’associations personnelles irrationnelles et on ne peut plus obsessionnelles Salvador Dali en vint à des interprétations dont on ne résiste pas à donner ici un aperçu : la fourche fichée en terre par le paysan signifie la pénétration sexuelle mais aussi un scalpel de dissection ; le chapeau que ce même homme tient contre lui « essaie de cacher son état d’érection » tandis que les poignées de la brouette derrière la femme répondent à la prière d’une mante religieuse. La suite et l’ensemble de cette interprétation « paranoïaque-critique » selon la définition de l’auteur figure dans un texte écrit en 1938 que Dali laissera longtemps de côté avant de l’éditer chez Jean-Jacques Pauvert en 1963. C'est dans son poème « Sludge le meÌdium » traduit de l'anglais en 1922 que Robert Browning s'identifie au fourmilier placide dans son attente et pourtant vif aÌ€ saisir sa proie : ce poème André Breton le cite dans une lettre aÌ€ DaliÌ du 10 janvier 1931 avant de lui préciser la mention qu'il souhaite apporter à son ex-libris : « l'inscription aÌ€ faire figurer en banderole sur l'ex-libris serait de préférence aÌ€ ‘André le Fourmilier' ‘AndreÌ le Tamanoir' fourmilier est trop générique. D'autre part il fait un peu plus pléonasme en raison des fourmis. Enfin il sert aÌ€ désigner par ailleurs d'assez médiocres animaux ».
