They were originally commissioned by Consul Smith and based on paintings by Canaletto.<br /><br />"Self-styled as painter architect and engraver Visentini enjoyed a long career in Venice where he was connected to the Academia and to the artistic and publishing circle centred around Consul Joseph Smith. Visentini's etchings are distinguished in the confidence and authority of their perspectival projection and etched line. Visentini's buildings seldom sag and never "sink" under their own weight into the water of the canals as they occasionally might in the work of Carlevaris and Mariechi. A large book is in excellent condition: 13" H x 11 1/4" W with flawless tan cloth HB covers with black print at front and spine. As new, appears unread. Binding is solid and square, covers have sharp corners, exterior shows no blemishes, text/interior is clean and free of marking of any kind. Dust jacket shows the slightest signs of shelf wear only, no tears. 107 pages on heavy, glossy paper with fold-out page at p.34 in excellent shape also. Contents include 50 drawings, studies, and sketches from the hand of Renaissance master Andrea Palladio, including archways, basilicas, temples, baths, capitals, columns. Lionello Puppi is author of The complete works of Canaletto and Andrea Palladio and is an authority on visual arts of the Veneto region.
