Nombreuses illustrations reproduites pour la plupart en couleurs : Adolf Böhm, Kolo Moser, Josef Hoffmann, Alfred Roller et quelques autres se réunissent autour de Gustav Klimt et fondent la "Secession Viennoise". Ils se font construire une "Maison" sur les plans de l'architecte Josef Olbrich et créent la revue VER SACRUM (le Printemps Sacré). Les contributions littéraires de Hofmannsthal ou Rilke s'y mêlent à celles, graphiques, de Hölzel ou Moser. Tous ces artistes chérissent l'illustration, l'affiche, la gravure, les papiers imprimés et, d'une manière générale, les techniques de l'ornementation. D'abord "florale", celle-ci devient "carrée" lorsque le mouvement atteint sa maturité constructiviste, entre 1901 et 1905. Car cette esthétique évolue à la mesure d'une formidable mutation sociale, idéologique et politique. L'Empire austro-hongrois se disperse ; l'ordre patriarcal et rationaliste incarné par François-Joseph est battu en brèche par de nouvelles valeurs : nature, affectivité, féminité. Vienne est au centre de l'Europe. Une étrange atmosphère s'y répand en sous-sol, peut-être annonciatrice des cataclysmes à venir. Cet ouvrage en est le remarquable témoignage.
