Offered here is an original color lithograph from his portfolio "Bible Lithographs" published in Verve in 1956. The image was later pictured in the catalogue for the grand opening of the Marc Chagall National Museum in Nice in 1973. Not long before Henri Matisse's death in 1954 Pablo Picasso remarked "When Matisse dies Chagall will be the only painter left who understands what colour really is." In a very good dust jacket with some corner wear and the original clear outer dust jacket which has a large piece missing from the front panel else complete. This is the true first edition whcih includes two bound-in lithographs executed by Chagall. This French issue textually identical to the New York issue appears to be differentiated by the grey cloth binding and the "Andre Sauret" imprint on the jacket spine. It seems to be significantly scarcer in commerce than the American issue. A stunningly beautiful book one of Chagall's great achievements. Andre Sauret hardcover
