ill., ril. Nel febbraio del 1917, mentre in Europa infuria la Grande Guerra, Pablo Picasso arriva per la prima volta in Italia, al seguito dell'amico Jean Cocteau. All'età di trentasei anni è già l'artista affermato che ha guidato la rivoluzione cubista. Durante il suo soggiorno a Roma e Napoli, rimane fortemente impressionato dalle rovine romane della capitale e dall'arte popolare partenopea. Lontano dai campi di battaglia, insieme a Cocteau, Djagilev, Massine e Stravinskij, Picasso cerca di individuare una propria via verso il modernismo, capace di coltivare il paradigma classico, non tanto come tradimento dell'arte moderna sotto la pressione del nazionalismo, ma come mezzo per sfruttare gli impulsi primitivisti e modernisti. La prima pietra fu posata a Roma, quando Picasso ideò i costumi, le scene e il sipario di Parade (su musica di Satie), che qualche mese più tardi debuttò a Parigi, diventando un vero e proprio caso. Un secolo dopo il viaggio di Picasso in Italia questa retrospettiva esplora le sperimentazioni stilistiche dell'artista: dalle giocose superfici decorative dei collage eseguiti durante la guerra al realismo stilizzato degli anni di Djagilev, dalle nature morte d'ispirazione cubista alle opere classiche, contraddistinte da una grandiosità che si richiama all'antico. Questa mostra è parte della manifestazione "Picasso-Mediterranée", un evento culturale di respiro internazionale che si svolge tra il 2017 e il 2019. Il programma, a cui partecipano più di sessanta istituzioni, comprende una serie di iniziative articolate intorno all'opera "ostinatamente mediterranea" di Pablo Picasso. L'itinerario tra i luoghi dell'arte picassiana, promosso dal Musée national Picasso-Paris, offre un'inedita esperienza culturale con l'obiettivo di rafforzare i legami tra le diverse sponde del Mediterraneo.
