19341529Llibreria Catalonia: np 1934. 1st Edition. Very Good. FIRST EDITION with the EXTREMELY RARE AND SOUGHT-AFTER POCHOIR BY MIRÓ From Here and There: Figures by the Sea; one of only five pochoirs created in his career. "After their first encounter Miró and the architect Sert continued to meet often through the group of painters sculptors and art critics of the cultural group known as ADLAN 1932-1936." Through the joint efforts of ADLAN and GATCPAC a group of architects active from 1930 to 1936 came "the most representative publication of that period: a special issue of the magazine D'Aci i d'Allà focusing on twentieth-century art-the 1934 Christmas issue-directly supervised by Joan Prats and Josep Lluís Sert and with the participation of Joan Miró in the first instance of a collaboration between the artist and the architect . The result of this joint effort was far more than a mere revision of contemporary visual arts; it became a guidebook to the new trends and to the avant-garde aesthetic providing information both about the art world and about the latest advances in the fields of housing and construction. Joan Miró was the main protagonist of the issue of D'Aci i d'Allà directed by Sert once again being praised as a contemporary primitive. In designing the cover and the famous pochoir specifically created for this issue Miró managed to convey the greatest expressive force with minimal resources using only red yellow and black against the white paper background" Vecchierini 46-48. The most sought-after issue of this Spanish magazine which contains an hors texte colour pochoir plate by Joan Miró Figures davant el mar printed in yellow red and black. There are also texts by C. Soldevila L. Fernández C. Zervos J. L. Sert J.V. Foix C. Sindreu M.A. Cassanyes A. Jakovsky and S. Gasch. Cramer 11. Barcelona: Llibreria Catalonia 1934. Size: 330 x 280 mm approx. 13 x 11 inches. Image/sheet size 30 3/4 x 22 1/4 in. 78.0 x 56.4 cm unmatted Deckled edges.

Miro created this lithograph as an advertising poster for the modern ballet Lucifer performed by the Martha Graham Dance Company featuring Margot Fonteyn and Rudolf Nureyev as guest artists. Lucifer premiered June 19 1975 at The Uris Theater in New York City as the main feature of The Martha Graham Gala.

In Martha Graham's words "Many people have asked me why I did Lucifer with Rudolf Nureyev. Lucifer is the bringer of light. When he fell from grace he mocked God. He became half god half man. As half man he knew men's fears anguish and challenges. He became the god of light. Any artist is the bringer of light. That's why I did Lucifer with Nureyev. He's a god of light. And Margot Fonteyn was such a glorious complement to him at it. Luminous as night. When I first saw Margot Fonteyn she was a great and beautiful figure." Unidentified interview with Martha Graham 1975.

Fonteyn provides background as to the Premiere of Lucifer in 1975. "It was certainly a star occasion. Tickets for the performance went on sale from $10000 down to $50. Fans wore Martha Margot Rudi buttons. Among other things the Gala may have been a sort of official celebration of the marriage between classical ballet and modern dance. Martha dominated her Gala from a Chinese chair beside the proscenium arch where she announced each ballet. The fashion designer Halston made the Lucifer costumes." It was the first performance for Fonteyn without toe shoes. From " Bibliographic Treasures and Medieval Maps": "This manuscript was illustrated in two different periods: 1 Canterbury c. 1200- 184 pages. It opens with what Leroquais called the Psalter prologue consisting of 8 extraordinary full-page miniatures and continues with 52 fascinating miniatures at the beginning of each Psalm. Most pages feature decorated initials. 2 Catalonia c. 1340: from page 185 onwards we find 46 miniatures framed by bright colours and divided into two or three bands each divided into two or three compartments. This section is characterised by the great iconographic freedom of the typological interpretation of both the Psalms and the New Testament prophecies. The architectural and plant details and motifs and the dress and colour range employed are very homogenous although certain stylistic variations indicate the participation of different artists from the same workshop. The part painted by Ferrer Bassa was in all likelihood commissioned by Peter the Ceremonious. Copy No. 335. 1188Paris, Éditions Jeanne Bucher, novembre 1928.

1937510540Verve 1937. First Edition. Paperback. FINE. Complete run of the first four issues of Teriade's legendary art magazine. Beginning with a stunning cover produced by Matisse for the first issue Verve would incorporate fresh artwork into its cover designed newly commissioned by artists such as Miro Picasso Chagall and other leading lights of the French art world. Each issue offered spectacular color lithographs printed by the Paris lithographers Mourlot. Early issues came in litho-printed card wrappers in boxes later volumes would be in paper-over board with litho covers. This choce allowed Teriade to feature the fresh lithographic artwork in the cover design but left the books themselves extremely fragile and succeptible to wear. Additionally the full-page lithographs have been continuous targets for art dealers looking to excise the plates. So condition seen here is quite rare with each volume preserved COMPLETE FINE with no signs of the wear and toning so commonly seen. 'The cover of Verve No. 1 is by Henri Matisse; it consists of three unmodulated colors--red blue and black--that the master cut directly from printers' ink specimen books. . Mattisse's cover for the first issue lithographed by Fernand Mourlot printers was an original work of art created expressly for the magazine--as would be practically all of the Verve's covers. . The painter took great pains to make sure that the cover would turn out exactly as he wished. . THe care Matisse lavished on what others might consider a minor undertaking was one of the hallmarks of Teriade's publications. How did he induce the greatest artists of this century to give the very best of themelves . Matisse and Teriade shared a common ideal. For both of them painting was life itself.'
