This was the first of Sabatini's three series of fictionalized historical events -- followed by other series in 1919 and in 1938. The thirteen episodes all have "The Night of." titles -- specifically: ".Holyrood" ".Kirk o' Field" ".Betrayal" ".Charity" ".Massacre" ".Witchcraft" ".Gems" ".Terror" ".Nuptials" ".Stranglers" ".Hate" ".Escape" and ".Masquerade." In his Preface Sabatini says he chose "more or less famous events. which were in themselves bizarre and resulting from the interplay of human passions." This is a near-fine copy top edge of spine label scuffed away barely affecting the first word of the title. This UK edition of the first series is rather scarce being a wartime book published before Sabatini found his stride after the war with books like SCARAMOUCHE and CAPTAIN BLOOD. <br/><br/> hardcover books
