Precedence is unclear between this edition and the London edition published by Hutchinson which is undated.

Rafael Sabatini 1875-1950 is today best known for his novel Captain Blood. His Italian father and English mother were both well-known opera singers and Sabatini took up writing after a brief stint in the business world.

The Carolinian shares many aspects of Sabatini's other novels: an action-packed plot adventure romance and acts of grand heroism. 17035770Rome: Gaetano Zenobi 1703. First edition. The author was a Spanish engraver and printer who lived and worked in Rome for part of his life. Vittoria wrote the material probably in Spanish while still living in Valencia. In the preface he apologizes for his Italian which "lacks purity." The significance of the book according to the art historian Anthony Blunt lies in the author's descriptions of several drawings by Raphael and his contemporaries which are either lost or known only in engraved copies. Condition noted. . Octavo 23 cm; 114 2 pages. Vignette with arms of Pope Clement XI flanked by putti on title page. LACKS FRONTISPIECE PORTRAIT. Decorated letters and ornaments in text. Don Vasco who distinguished himself in the service of the Spanish Crown in Mexico proclaims his humility before the office of his charge never before entrusted to a military man and invokes education as an antidote to envy hate revenge and thoughts of theft lies and deception. He also challenges the need for capital punishment and other legal injustices. During his short-lived presidency over Granada's highest court the region enjoyed peace and a flowering of the arts which ended with Napoleon's invasion of Spain and the subsequent popular uprisings against the Spanish Crown.
