Che Rubens abbia unito l’arte del Nord con quella del Sud è il concetto più profondamente radicato nell’ideale di Burckhardt: l’iniziale entusiasmo per le correnti nordiche, la successiva adorazione per quelle italiane e il meditato apprezzamento di quelle olandesi, tutto converge nella figura del pittore fiammingo, in un rapporto di continuità con i predecessori italiani che durerà per tutta la vita. Per Burckhardt, Rubens non è un semplice “oggetto di studio”: egli fa parte del suo mondo interiore, è il prototipo dell’uomo creatore che attua un processo di assimilazione dal passato e dal presente Autori: Jacob Burckhardt.
