Preface by Charles Durand-Ruel. Note by Jean Renoir, the artist's son. Illustrated mostly in black & white. 13" high X 10" wide, 429 pages. Scarce. Large heavy book, foreign shipping will be extra. Full green Morocco leather binding by Giulio Giannini of Firenze Florence with an inlaid red leather spine label; protected in custom-fitted archival mylar. There is minor shelfwear including a number of tiny scuffs. Number 3 of a limited edition of 45 copies signed by Lionello Venturi with an original etching by Renoir tipped-in. The etching which is unsigned is titled "Baigneuse debout a mi-jambes" and was printed in 1910 or shortly thereafter. It is in excellent condition as one might expect being protected inside a book. There is only the first state of this etching Delteil 23. There are at least three distinct impression categories depending upon when and the order in which they were printed. This impression is an early one but not among the earliest with a very good plate tone and maintaining very good detail in the dark areas. Later impressions lose detail and allow much more ink on the paper. The limitation page reads "Tiratura limitata a 45 esemplari numerati oltre a cinque fuori commercio. Copia No 3. L'incisione allegata a ogni copia e originale di Auguste Renoir." Previous owner's gift inscription on the front endpaper that of Boston teacher and poet Antonio Alfredo Giarroputo.
