He served as Residency Surgeon in Jaipur from 1873 to 1897 then became Inspector-General of Hospitals in the North-West Provinces and later in Bengal. Besides his medical career Hendley was a passionate advocate for Indian art co-designing the Jaipur Gate in 1886. He published books on Indian art co-founded the Quarterly Journal of Indian Art and contributed significantly to cultural institutions.
