John Chamberlaine London. 1792. Conrad Martin Metz was an eminent engraver in the chalk manner and aquatint. He received his education in art under the celebrated Bartolozzi. Bartolozzi the main engraver of this collection developed his style to imitate the subtleties of renaissance and baroque chalk drawings and became deservedly famous for his stipple engraving. The portraits in this collection show how effective this technique was in reproducing with such incredible fidelity Holbein's original designs. Metz also specialized in imitations and facsimiles of old masters such as Hans Holbein. Engraved by METZ C. Stipple engraving. Good condition despite some very slight scratching at top. Ex-library typically marked/stamped rubbed at corners and spine extremities dried glue residue along joints cloth moderately soiled and/or darkened by age with institutitional book plate mounted on front pastedown. Text block essentially disbound housed in case that now functions more as a portfolio to protects its edges; binding could be restored but due to fragility of paper we would not recommend it. First leaf of article pp.51-52 with color decorated border chipped with loss along fore-edge not affecting text subsequent leaf pp. 53-54 with fore-edge loss. Text occupies pp. 52-54 followed by 13 full page color chromolitho plates numbered 65-77 all suitable for extraction and framing if desired bound loosely by cord some partially detached also facsimile MS. sheet in the hand of Charles Wilkins Librarian East India House 1807. Modern Bradel binding in full pebbled paper smooth spine decorated with a red morocco label. Armorial bookplate of the Taets van Amerongen library remounted on the front pastedown. The first part is preceded by twelve pages of explanation of the plates the other three contain none like the other copies we have been able to consult.
