Hendley served in various medical roles in Jaipur Rajputana and Bengal before retiring in 1903. Beyond medicine he was passionate about Indian art publishing books and founding the Quarterly Journal of Indian Art. He helped establish the Jaipur Museum and served in prominent roles including as vice-president of the Bengal Asiatic Society. He also co-designed the Jaipur Gate.
