Per i suoi contemporanei veneziani del tardo XVI secolo, El Greco (1541 - 1614) era un artista anticonformista, dotato di un talento straordinario, ma ben deciso a intraprendere un percorso fuori dagli schemi. Durante la sua carriera, che lo vide trasferirsi da Creta a Venezia, e poi a Roma, per stabilirsi infine a Toledo, El Greco si contraddistinse per la capacità di amalgamare diverse tradizioni occidentali al fine di creare un linguaggio pittorico unico nel suo genere. L'artista cretese si distaccò fortemente dal naturalismo, rifiutandosi di creare opere ampiamente "accessibili". Le sue opere, come Spoliazione di Cristo (1577-79), Sepoltura del Conte di Orgaz (1586-88), e Apertura del quinto sigillo dell'Apocalisse (1608-14) mostrano figure allungate e contorte, colori irreali e una rappresentazione dello spazio innovativa, tutti elementi che non ne facilitavano l'osservazione, ma favorivano altresì un'arte di grande splendore e bellezza intellettuale. Guardato con sospetto e largamente criticato quando ancora in vita, El Greco è stato rivalutato da un gruppo di appassionati ammiratori moderni, tra cui Pablo Picasso, Roger Fry e Franz Marc, pioniere del Der Blaue Reiter. Oggi l'artista è annoverato tra la ristretta cerchia di grandi maestri dell'antichità e viene considerato un caso anomalo per la sua epoca, nonché un punto di riferimento per i secoli a venire. Questa concisa introduzione analizza gli influssi e gli elementi della peculiare visione di El Greco, dalla simbologia bizantina appartenente al mondo delle icone, ai principi dell'umanesimo rinascimentale, fino ai primi approcci alla pratica concettuale.
