This delightful little volume first published in French in 1936 extols the many joys and benefits of wine. Wine drinkers will take pleasure in Gaston Derys's quaint appreciation of the grape and art lovers will admire Raoul Dufy's joyful watercolors. Reflecting the exuberance and elan of an earlier day Derys takes us back to a time when the doctor's favored prescription was an amiable glass of wine. In Derys's ode to wine here translated into English we discover that the medicinal and therapeutic uses of wine are it assists in fighting typhoid infant sicknesses and diabetes; it exerts a positive effect on one's character beauty and and it lends a fortifying power to athletes and soldiers. Supported by the comments of French doctors as well as Dufy's beautifully reproduced paintings Derys's argument to raise a glass of wine becomes pleasantly irrefutable. 1911182771Paris: Deplanche 1911. One of the most important French illustrated books of the 20th century First edition one of 91 copies on Hollande paper from a total edition of 120 copies only signed by Apollinaire and Dufy as issued; the other 29 copies were on japon. This copy is additionally inscribed on the front free endpaper to a musician and music publisher "a monsieur Georges Vriamont cordialement Raoul Dufy". It is rare in the original binding. Apollinaire conceived the idea for the book after seeing wood engravings of animals made by Picasso in 1906. He turned to Dufy to create these striking full-page woodcuts his first published and most important illustrations. The more common second edition of 1918 reproduced the woodcuts in a smaller and less impressive format. There were a further two copies of this title printed hors commerce destined for dépôt légal with impressions of the cancelled blocks "rayées au couteau" scratched with a knife. Folio. Title page printed in red and black 30 woodcuts and 5 ornaments by Dufy in black. Original limp vellum wrappers edges untrimmed. Housed in a custom marbled blue chemise and slipcase. A few spots of foxing to endpapers offsetting from woodcuts; joints of chemise just starting: a near-fine copy.
