Robert Louis Stevenson 1850 - 1894 was a Scottish novelist essayist poet and travel writer who travel broadly and settled in Samoa in 1889 where he was prodigiously productive and where he became involved with local politics and culture gathering native stories and infusing some of his writing with these newfound themes. This first edition of the three short stories is accompanied by a set of engaging illustrations by Gordon Browne 1858 - 1932 and William Hatherell 1855-1928 both prolific illustrators who worked with publishers and magazines. This is a first edition first issue with the price corrected iwith over-stamping on the page before the half title of the short story collection by Robert Louis Stevenson. The collection is comprised of three short stories " The Beach of Falesá" "The Bottle Imp" and "The Isle of Voices" and contains some of the author's last writing before his death the following year. The book has 27 plates of illustrations with an index including a color map lithographically printed corresponding to the first story. Binding with some light rubbing and bumping to extremities and hinges of the spine. Some light stains to the front and back boards. Spine sunned. Interior with with starting at the gutters of interior covers. Light age toning to the edges of pages. Spine slightly cocked. Binding in good- interior in good condition overall. The illustrations to Parts VIII-XII are unsigned but by Hablot K. Brown aka "Phiz." The woodcut on the upper wrapper is by Hablot K. Brown. Advertisements collate per Schwerdt save Part VI which lacks the Note of Lever's Martin and Part VII lacking the slip for The Belle of the Village. Publisher's original red-brown pictorial wrappers. Minimal restoration of spines to a few volumes tiny chip to fore- edge of Part I otherwise an excellent and quite lovely set. Chemised and housed in a red cloth clamshell case with black leather spine label lettered in gilt.<br /> <br /> "Although Surtees approached his publishers in July 1861 with the idea of bringing out 'Mr. Facey Romford' they preferred not to undertake the matter until Mr. Leech's services were definitely secured and there would be no questoin of such delays as had occurred in the illustrations of 'Handley Cross.' Leech promised however to being in January 1862 and the situation seemed sufficiently secure to set up the type but just at this time the artist held his first exhibition of oil paintings which proved so successful and diverting that the 'Facey Romford' illustrations were again postponed. Surtees in despair at last offered the book in August 1864 to The Field where is was refused. Jerusalem Delivered La Gerusalemme liberata is an epic poem by the Italian poet Torquato Tasso first published in 1581 which tells a largely mythified version of the First Crusade in which Catholic knights led by Godfrey of Bouillon battle Muslims in order to take Jerusalem. The poem is composed of eight line stanzas grouped into 20 cantos of varying length. The poem was immensely successful throughout Europe and over the next two centuries various sections were frequently adapted as individual storylines for madrigals operas plays ballets and masquerades; scenes from the poem were also depicted in paintings and frescoes.
