Folio 32 x 24 cm very handsomely bound in three-quarter dark tan morocco over marbled paper covered boards the spine with raised bands gilt ruled compartments of the spine decorated with gilt at the centers lettered in gilt in two compartment. xxviii 737 pp. A very handsome and sturdy copy the binding is very strong and well preserved with virtually no wear the text-block lightly mellowed the plates in fine condition half-title with some browning at the edges a very pleasing copy. A PLEASING AND HANDSOME COPY. SCARCE IN SUCH WELL PRESERVED CONDITION. Gustave Doré was one of the greatest illustrators of his day. He was born in Strassburg in 1832. In 1848 he moved to Paris where “his facility as a draughtsman was extraordinary.†He was a prolific worker and his subjects were usually religious or historical. He died in January of 1883. <br> His grand and magnificent style is a perfect complement for Cervantes heroic tale. This great tome presents one of our favorite printings of the Spanish classic and because of the weight of the text block is usually found broken and loose. Vol. II: ii 321-757 pages. Bound in the original red pebbled cloth which is moderately darkened on the spine and slightly soiled on boards and minimal shelfwear overall. Printed paper spine labels are somewhat rubbed and darkened but intact; spine label states "EDITION DE LUXE." In addition to the 300 black & white Dore illustrations printed on regular paper there are an additional 100 engraved plates finely printed on heavy paper. These were etched by the noted Jean-Baptiste Oudry 1686-1755 after masters of French engraving including Charles Nicolas Cochin. Etchings are remarkably clean and unblemished protected by the original tissue overlays. Text is clean with a very few instances of minor soiling. No date of publication listed; circa 1885. Folio. xii 191 1 pp. Contemporary wine red full morocco spine with raised bands gilt lettered direct to one panel and decorated to the others gilt lettering to the upper board also marbled endpapers all edges gilt. Frontispiece second title and 52 plates with captioned tissues plus illustrations in the text loosely inserted is an original drawing measuring roughly 23 x 15 cm mounted on card the margins captioned in pencil in an early hand "Doré in London" further pencilled annotations on the card verso. Some uneven discolouration to the covers rubbing to the extremities an attractive copy overall. The loose illustration has the initials "WP" to the lower right-hand corner but is otherwise unattributed. It features the standing figure of Gustave Doré with a pen and sketchbook in his hands on the pavement of what would appear to be Wapping Wall - the street sign for Pelican Stairs is visible on the right hand side. The scene is probably imagined though as the historic pub the Prospect of Whitby is not shown a public house has stood on the site bordered by Pelican Stairs since the early 16th century and the current building was built in the early 19th century. The illustration features typical London types - men in their work clothes a young female clutching a small child and a driver with horse and carriage. London: Grant & Co. unknown

Four pages written in black ink on a double sheet of white paper with envelope. Fine letter full of torment in which Gustave Doré dreads being supported again for the rank of officer in the Legion of Honor he who was made chevalier in 1861 after the publication of Dante's Inferno and thanks to Paul Dalloz's intervention. Doré thanks him moreover for this past influence: ""Je viens te remercier encore et du plus profond de mon cur de l'amitié toute dévouée que vous m'avez témoignée dans ces dernières circonstances ; et je t'assure que je te conserve pour ce fait des sentiments aussi reconnaissants que pour le service que tu m'as si spontanément et cordialement rendu il y douze ans."" ""I come to thank you again and from the depths of my heart for the devoted friendship you have shown me in these recent circumstances; and I assure you that I preserve for this fact feelings as grateful as for the service you rendered me so spontaneously and cordially twelve years ago."" He nevertheless asks him not to propose him for the rank of officer: ""Mais je viens réclamer de toi les mêmes amitiés te priant te suppliant même de t'arrêter complétement et absolument ce qui je n'en doute pas te coûtera plus encore qu'autre chose. J'ai beaucoup pensé à tout ce que tu m'as dit hier et je trouve que je me suis trompé tout à fait en te laissant t'engager si obligeamment dans ces démarches."" ""But I come to claim from you the same friendships asking you even begging you to stop completely and absolutely which I do not doubt will cost you more than anything else. Remarkably well-preserved copy in strong bright binding free of fraying or wear apart from insiginifcant rubbing at corners and minor soiling on lower board. Light waterstain at lower edge of initial leaves and at lower right corner of few interior leaves more noticeable toward last leaves. Few spots on text pages. "Nevermore" plate loose but present. Plates effectlvely clear and unmarred. ORIGINAL DEDICATED SHIPPING BOX virtually unobtainable blue paper over cardboard printed with "Poe's Raven Illustrated by Doré" in a fantastical font. Box is in deplorable condition broken and repaired with 20th-century masking tape some flaps missing stained and dusty but present <br /><br />The first American printing of Doré's last work and a signal edition of Poe's signature poem with original box.</p> Harper & Brothers hardcover

Only very light evidence of age to the binding. A very well preserved and quite excellent copy. A BEAUTIFULLY BOUND AND WELL PRESERVED COPY OF THIS MASTERPIECE BY GUSTAVE DORé. An impressive tome of some of the best loved fables including ‘The Grasshopper and the Ant’ ‘The hen with the golden eggs’ and well over 150 more. With his full-page engravings Gustave Doré does his best work with great dramatic flare. The countless smaller illustrations round out the book and make it a truly outstanding publishing endeavor.<br> Many of the fables were in the main adapted from the classical fabulists Aesop Babrius and Phaedrus. In these La Fontaine adhered to the path of his predecessors with some closeness; but in others he allowed himself far more liberty and there is a wider range of sources. The Indian Bidpai is drawn upon for oriental fables that had come to the French through translations from Persian. So while the subject of each of the Fables is often common property of many ages and races what gives La Fontaine's Fables their rare distinction is the freshness in narration the deftness of touch the unconstrained suppleness of metrical structure and the unfailing humor. XXXII 665 pp. Balzac's "Contes drolatiques" which the author considered his masterpiece first appeared between 1832 and 1837. In 1855 appeared the first illustrated edition with 425 wood-engravings after Gustave Doré which Doré considered his masterpiece but the images were printed from electrotypes plate rather than from the actual blocks so the impressions are somewhat dull. A second edition with Doré illustrations appeared in 1861 again printed from the electrotype plates except 25 copies. This third edition with the Doré illustrations published in 1867 is THE FIRST EDITION PRINTED ENTIRELY FROM THE ORIGINAL BLOCKS. This is furthermore ONE OF ONLY 25 COPIES PRINTED ON FINE CHINESE PAPER RENDERING THE IMPRESSIONS EVEN SHARPER. 8vo. Attractively bound in three-quarters morocco and marbled boards c. 1900. Bound in full dark green morocco with thick borders in gilt to the boards front and rear with titles stamped right on the leather to the compartments compartments with thick gilt borders and gilt stamped crest of The Most Noble Order of the Garter with the motto Honi soit qui mal y pense. The leather is rubbed at the extremities some scuffing and peeling at some edges volume 2 boards with heavier scuffs and marks with a rip in the leather at the upper front joint. All engravings with captioned guards some guards a little foxed sporadic foxing throughout with light water staining for about the last 20 leaves of volume 2 but only at the fore-edge corner tips and pretty unobtrusive. Overall a very clean and bright set. All edges gilt marbled endpapers hinges strong and the bindings tight and square. With a little bit of touch up to the leather this set can look even better. Both Dante's and Dore's masterpieces in two volumes. Translated into French by Pier-Angelo Fiorentino with the Italian Text. Hachette et Cie unknown
