Complete with 25 black & white engravings. A few spots of foxing near the image area of a few plates. The first several pages and plates are loose with minor chipping tearing and browning to edges not affecting images. The bottom edge of all pages and plates with minor staining. Second edition.In the publisher's original decorative cloth binding. With engraved half title page but lacking title page.Decorated throughout with engravings including a frontispiece engraved half title page twenty-three plates two panoramic plates two folding maps and numerous vignettes. Collated complete. This work is the result of the Bartlett's visit to Jerusalem in the summer of 1842 providing topographical historical and cultural observations of his walks through the Holy City. With descriptions of the citadel Arab women Jewish antiquities the Church of the Holy Sepulchre the Mosque of Omar and much more.W. H. Bartlett was a British artist best known for his drawings rendered into steel engravings particularly those that depicted ruins or elements of the past. In the original decorative cloth binding. Externally with rubbing and bumping to the extremities. Fading to the cloth and a small numbered reference label to the corner of the front board. Rear hinge is starting but firm. Armorial bookplate of one F. E. B. Witts to the front pastedown. Internally firmly bound. M. J. by William F. E. Gunley of Chicago 33 degrees Chicago Illinois August 7 1939." With the Council's stamp and an earlier bookplate on endpapers; very good. William Henry Bartlett was a prolific illustrator mostly of landscapes and a well-travelled author. His writing was workmanlike and served mainly to frame his illustrations which were popular during his time.
