Text is the original 1885 printing approved in April 1884 and certified by Attorney General William Breeden on March 28th 1885. This compilation was the first compilation of New Mexico Territory law since 1865; it was commissioned in 1884 by the Legislative Assembly for the purpose of compiling "all the laws general local and private which shall be in force on the fifth day of May 1884." Intended to be comprehensive this edition was published in one volume in English and Spanish and includes the Constitution of the United States the Treaty of Guadalupe Hidalgo the Gadsden Treaty the original act organizing the territory the original Kearny code and a list of laws specifically enacted since the 1865 compilation. The commissioners - Edward L. Bartlett Charles W. Greene and Santiago Valdez along with secretary Ireneo L. Chaves - were appointed by Governor Lionel Allen Sheldon at a rate of six dollars each daily. Book is in good condition original covers chipped bumped rubbed marked and scraped; spine is cracked and missing a 1/2" corner; bottom of new leatherette spine has a white mark; edges of textblock are dustsoiled and stained with a dark black mark on the foreedge affecting pp.446-488; some pages are lightly stained with corners folded but are generally otherwise clean albeit toning slightly; copyright page has a 1" tear to the top. 1736pp. incl. index. From the introduction: "For the 18th Century imprints the important period of late colonial times and the American Revolution the only chronological list of the John Carter Brown Library is still the Third Part of John Russell Bartlett's first catalogue which we are now reprinting. The fifty copies originally printed have almost all disappeared and the Union Catalog at the Library of Congress indicates that less than five copies are located in American libraries. The present reprint edition was made from the copy in the New York Public Library. The handwritten annotations were made by the eminent bibliographer Wilberforce Eames one-time Lenox Librarian who continued Sabin's bibliography. Heavy bumping to board corners on both volumes exposing cardboard. Prior owner's signature in ink in both volumes multiple times in Vol 1. Short gift inscriptions in pencil and bookplates of Henry Hamilton illustrated with the Hamilton coat of arms laid in on paste-down of each volume. Each volume is missing one illustration and a tissue layer in Vol 1 has been torn out and other illustrations have significant foxing or occasional staining. Text is foxed throughout with occasional staining but still clear and readable. Marbled page block edges are worn and faded. Marbled endpapers in good condtiion a little worn/browned. John Stephen Bartlett had been expelled from the Society for "consulting with irregular practitioners and aiding and abetting quacks" namely Patrick Kearney an Irish Catholic physician and John Williams an oculist who had practiced in France.
