Dealing with the founders of New England under the reign of James I the work contains twenty-eight engravings on steel and thirty-two woodcuts including plates. In decorative cloth binding with gilt detailing. Externally quite smart there is some wear and rubbing to the extremities and joints as well as slight sunning to backstrip and cocking to spine. The hinges are also somewhat strained. Internally the pages are firmly bound but there are instances of spotting and foxing throughout. Contains and ink inscription to front free endpaper. John Stephen Bartlett had been expelled from the Society for malpractice after 'consulting with irregular practitioners and aiding and abetting quacks' namely Patrick Kearney an Irish Catholic physician and John Williams an oculist who had practiced in France. He had therefore petitioned the legislature to declare the charter of the Massachusetts Medical Society void. <br>Â Â Â Â <br>Â Â Â Â American Imprints 54294; Beal 14867.50; Sabin 3756. Never bound; original stitching perished and all leaves loose; chipping at edges; dust-soiled. One handy with needle and appropriate thread can easily make this right again. Holt the first judge of the United States District Court of Puerto Rico appointed by President McKinley in 1900. This work by D.W. Bartlett 1828-1912 was the second book length biography of the Republican presidential candidate in 1860. It was announced by H. Dayton of New York on May 19th and released on June 4th. The first publication was released in paper wrappers but was followed by the "Authorized Edition" two weeks later with various publication imprints. William Henry Bartlett born March 26 1809 died September 13 1854 was a British artist best known for his numerous steel engravings. Bartlett was born in Kentish Town London in 1809. He was apprenticed to John Britton 1771-1857 and became one of the foremost illustrators of topography of his generation. He travelled throughout Britain and in the mid and late 1840s he travelled extensively in the Balkans and the Middle East. He made four visits to the United States between 1835 and 1852. In 1835 Bartlett first visited the United States in order to draw the buildings towns and scenery of the northeastern states. The finely detailed steel engravings Bartlett produced were published uncolored with a text by Nathaniel Parker Willis as American Scenery; or Land Lake and River: Illustrations of Transatlantic Nature. American Scenery was published by George Virtue in London in 30 monthly installments from 1837 to 1839. Bound editions of the work were published from 1840 onward. His impressions of Canada were collected in Canadian Scenery in 1842. Bartlett made sepia wash drawings the exact size to be engraved. His engraved views were widely copied by artists but no signed oil painting by his hand is known. Engravings based on Bartlett's views were later used in his posthumous History of the United States of North America continued by B. B. Woodward and published around 1856. William Henry Bartlett died of fever on board of a French ship off the coast of Malta returning from his last trip to Israel in 1854. Bartletts primary concern was to render "lively impressions of actual sights" as he wrote in the preface to The Nile Boat London 1849. Many views contain some ruin or element of the past including many scenes of churches abbeys cathedrals and castles and Nathaniel Parker Willis described Bartlett's talent thus: "Bartlett could select his point of view so as to bring prominently into his sketch the castle or the cathedral which history or antiquity had allowed".
