Some leaves of the Chansons de Béranger Volume II are slightly loosened but still holding some plates are detached but present. Volumes I and II each contain 53 steel engravings after Charlet A. de Lemud Johannot Grenier Jacque Pauquet Penguilly De Rudder Raffet and Sandoz. Musique de Béranger is illustrated by Grandville numerous full-page plates in black and white. The work contains notated airs both old and modern augmented with music for posthumous songs with airs composed by Béranger Halévy Gounod and Laurent De Rille. Les Dernières chansons de Béranger from 1834 to 1851 are expanded with a letter and preface by the author. Handsome set of 4 volumes collecting the works of Béranger richly decorated with illustrations by Grandville Charlet A. Purple coloured cloth with gilt spine and front board. Spine darkened and gilt dulled. Front board at upper edge a bit discoloured and bubbled corners worn. All edges gilt. Endpapers foxed. 15 black and white plates 1 of which is a double page plate which may account for the 16. 15 complete as called for in the list of illustrations. Plate 7 showing "The arrest of Mr. Chanticleer" with early clear tape repair about 1 inch in length only in white space margin. Book otherwise clean throughout and a very good copy overall. T. It is unclear to us who wrote the text which accompanies the illustrations. An earlier edition appears to have been published by Bogue in London in 1852. T. Nelson and Sons hardcover

The 32 illustrations by Grandville are a continual source of delight for which many of Quixote's classic mis-adventures are immortalized with characteristic humour and charm. Without any of the foxing found in most copies. Overall an exceptional copy the gold and polychrome on the binding very bright and fresh. unknown
