FREE UPGRADE to Courier/Priority Shipping Upon Request IN STOCK AND IMMEDIATELY AVAILABLE FOR SHIPMENT - Flawless copy brand new pristine never opened - Inscribed & signed by Vickers. 255 pages. Book Description: Exciting and provocative in its argument this book challenges the widely held view that Greek pottery vases were objects of great value in antiquity commissioned by rich patrons from the greatest artists of the day. Instead they are shown to have been simply low cost versions of tablewareoriginally made in silver and gold. This book demonstrates how Greek pottery first came to be regarded as a high value commodity in the eighteenth century thanks to clever if not fraudulent sales techniques; it examines the primary sources both literary and epigraphic to find what materials theancients did consider to be important; and it explores the ways in which work in gold and silver influenced painted pottery. -- with a bonus offer-- . 1842738L2Boston: William Crosby and Company 1842. First edition. Fine Binding. Fine. 7" by 4.5". None. A fine example of this uncommon work regarding a dinner hosted in Boston where Charles Dickens gave a speech on International Copyright. This work was published following Dickens' first trip to America. He visited many locations including Virginia Missouri and New York. He enjoyed the city of Boston which is where this celebratory dinner was held. It is a faithful account of the speeches made that evening. In attendance at the dinner were Oliver Wendell Holmes Washington Allston George Bancroft and Nathan Hale Jr among many noted literary figures. Dickens' own speech is recorded to pages 10-15 and he introduces the subject of International Copyright. A truly fine copy of this uncommon work. In a finely bound full morocco binding. Externally fine. Internally firmly bound. Pages are bright. Spotting to the first and last few pages. Scattered spots to the fore-edge. Not affecting the pages. Fine William Crosby and Company unknown

1865129583London: Published by Paul Jerrard & Son for the Proprietor Messrs. Newbold & Co 1865. Very Good. London Published by Paul Jerrard & Son for the Proprietor Messrs. Newbold & Co. after 1865. Two hand-coloured lithographs individually framed and glazed at a much later date matted just outside the printed border obscuring the series title and plate number above the upper border; visible image sizes approximately 210 × 260 mm; external dimensions 422 × 447 mm. Hand-colouring a little faded; light uneven tanning to the 'Bushrangers' plate; overall in excellent condition but not examined out of the frames. The complete series comprises twelve views of the Australian goldfields in the manner of S.T. Gill; the set 'was probably issued loose without any title or wrapper' Wantrup page 327. The two plates on offer are 'The Lost Bushman or The Unfortunate Digger That Never Returned' Number 2 and 'Bushrangers waiting for the Mails in New South Wales' Number 5. The title is printed beneath the image along with four lines of explanatory text; the 'Lost Bushman' plate also has an additional four lines of verse.
Wantrup suggests a date of publication after the appearance of Gill's 'Australian Sketchbook' in 1865 due to the numerous similarities between the two works. Complete sets of this series and probably individual plates too are clearly rare: Wantrup refers to incomplete sets selling at auction in 1977 and 1982 and the only addition to the book auction records since then is the incomplete set in the 2008 Davidson Collection sale when 11 framed and glazed plates sold for $18640 against an estimate of $6000-8000.
Ferguson 15738b; Wantrup 255. 2 items.
