With architectural drawings and referencing Troilus & Criseyde. Gill writes to his friend J.G. Wilson of the Bumpus Bookshop in London regarding his engraving "Flying Buttresses" mentioning his work on Troilus & Criseyde for the Golden Cockerel Press and mentioning another of his publishers. An excellent technical letter with 5 small drawings in the text. In part: "I am working like anything on the engravings for the Golden Cockerel Troilus & Criseyde. I expect to finish the engravings by about Easter . I shall come and see you as soon as possible to talk over things and explain how it happened that D. Cleverdon is publishing my next . Meanwhile this is just to make a brief apology for myself in the matter of the Buttresses! Is matter of fact they aren't so blooming wrong in the engraving as your correspondent thinks. It's the perspective which makes the difficulty." The engraving in question is "Flying Buttresses" based on a drawing of St. Pierre Chartes used to illustrated Gill's 1926 essay "Id Quod Visum Placet." Gill uses the rest of the letter to explain with the aid of five small sketches why the perspective is in fact correct. Douglas Cleverdon the Bristol bookseller and publisher brought out Gill's Art and Love in 1927 as well as a collection of his engravings in 1929. unknown books

In pristine condition.

This is the deluxe copy of a comprehensive survey of Gill's work as an engraver and typecutter prepared as a labor of love by his nephew Christopher Skelton. Glaister describes Eric Gill 1882-1940 as "an English craftsman engraver type designer sculptor and philosopher whose influence on contemporary book production has been profound and world-wide." Gill studied lettering as a young man under Edward Johnston then for five years beginning in 1905 designed and engraved title pages and initials for books printed by Count Harry Kessler at Insel Verlag Leipzig Kessler would go on to found the Cranach Press in 1913. Later Gill did a great deal of woodcut illustration for other private press publications especially the Golden Cockerel Press including memorable work for the famous "Four Gospels" "Troilus and Criseyde" and "Canterbury Tales".

The 993 illustrations in the body of the present offering and the 51 in the appendix include all of the wood engravings from those works as well as Gill's other book illustrations individual engravings typefaces Christmas cards and bookplates. The subjects for the most part are either religious or erotic--and sometimes controversially both. The portfolio prints are "A Garden Enclosed" "Self-portrait" "Surrexit Alleluia" "Tree and Dog with Flames" "St. Thomas's Hands" "Girl with a Mirror" "I Am a Little World" and "Man and Woman Embracing." Skelton 1925-92 learned printing from Gill's son-in-law René Hague and operated a private press from 1968 to 1985. This is the magnum opus of that workshop.

This copy comes from the Garden Collection assembled by Haven O'More with funding from Michael Davis which was the most outstanding library of notable books put together in America in the second half of the 20th century. When it was auctioned by Sotheby's in 1989 the sale brought in $16.2 million. The library included high spots from all periods the four Shakespeare folios the first of "Don Quixote" and Blake's "Songs of Innocence and Experience" brought in more than $5 million alone and the collection was breathtaking in its impeccable condition. 1937127001Coventry: 1937. Original drawing by Gill entitled "The Good Shepherd" for one of a pair of reliefs commissioned for the original hospital building in Coventry in 1937. Inscribed by Gill "1 Coventry" in the upper left corner dated "15.11.37" in the lower right. The designs for the second relief entitled "The Good Samaritan" were drawn on an identical advertisement leaf and were completed on 17 November. Gill began carving the reliefs on 31 October 1938 finishing them on 13 November. Coventry Hospital was however struck during the Blitz and The Good Shepherd relief was destroyed during an air-raid on the hospital in 1941. Although damaged The Good Samaritan relief largely survived the bombing and now sits on the out-patient's department as the hospital's war memorial. The design is drawn on the verso of an advertisement leaf for "Essays in orthodoxy". Gill 308.

A beautiful production from the Leipzig publishing house Insel Verlag founded by Alfred Walter Heymel and Rudolf Alexander Schroeder in 1901. The first director of operations was Rudolf von Poellnitz who published well-designed books on wood-free India paper. The firm's founders were friends of the diplomat and aesthete Count Harry von Kessler Harry Graf Kessler who was professionally connected with the ruler of Weimar Grand Duke Wilhelm Ernst of Saxe-Weimar-Eisenach. Kessler hatched a scheme to revitalize German book arts by convincing the Grand Duke to lend his name to series of literary classics beautifully composed and bound and legibly printed in roman type that would be published by Insel Verlag under Kessler's own guidance. The net profit from the "Grand Duke Wilhelm-Ernst Edition" would fund the Duke's artistic endeavors in Weimar.

Kessler threw himself into the work with his usual intensity and persuaded Emery Walker to be his overseer. Walker had directed William Morris' Kelmscott Press and later cofounded Doves Press and Kessler wrote to a friend that he was "the very soul of what has been created in England in terms of printed books" and probably the greatest printing talent since the Renaissance. Walker brought Eric Gill to Kessler's attention and Gill was hired to cut the titles. Douglas Cockerell was also brought on board. Some German critics resented the number of Englishmen involved in the new edition but the books sold well and were soon imitated by other German publishers.

Die Odyssee combined the artistic talents of Eric Gill and the French sculptor Aristide Maillol. Gill designed the capitals and titles while Maillol designed the wood engraved vignettes. Kessler was a friend and admirer of both and at one point he decided that Gill should move to France and apprentice to Maillol even going as far as signing a three-year lease on a house in the Parisian suburbs for him. Gill obligingly traveled to Paris and met the sculptor who was perfectly amiable but spoke no English. Gill spoke no French. Kessler translated for them and seemed to find nothing wrong with the arrangement but when Gill returned to his hotel that night he pondered three years in a dreary suburb and the loss of his work in England and decided to flee home on the night train: "If I delayed to see Kessler I should be trapped; for I couldn't stand up against his overmastering confidence in his own schemes or for that matter against my sense of his extraordinary kindness and generosity."

Gill wrote in his autobiography that both men were "angelic" about it and they continued to work together. Gill and Maillol famously collaborated on the edition of Virgil's Eclogues and Georgics published by Cranach Press the fine press Kessler founded in 1913. His work at Insel had prepared him to make an even greater contribution to the art of book design and his Hamlet 1929 is one of the finest books printed in the 20th century. The Grand Duke Wilhelm-Ernst Edition is a forerunner to that magnificence. Insel Verlag unknown
