A fine erotic poem wherein the speaker is possessed by Spring. Gill designed four further engravings which were excluded from this edition due to their slightly more explicit nature. Artist's edition from Stephen Gill in which he issued a new series of his Hackney Wick photographs in unique fashion via a series of interventions to 130 withdrawn books from the Hackney Public Library system. In this case: Gill affixed 15 C-type hand prints 4.5 inches square into an Ernst Eulenburg edition of Bach's Cantata No. 55 circa 1930 along with a sun-etched lino print with burn-marks a pressed flower shoe and bicycle tire prints drawings and various letterpress elements. Blue buckram with gilt-lettered spine and bevelled edges. Octavo. Binding extremities lightly rubbed. Spine has some light toning and fading. Bookplate of Merle Armitage on front pastedown. Pages untrimmed. Holographic Eric Gill letter written to Merle Armitage and dated 6/3/31 laid in. Gill writes: "I would sign your book for you with / pleasure if you wd. send it. But this / seems a large trouble for so small an / advantage. / Why not cut out the above signature & stick it in" A very good copy and a wonderful association In Art-Nonsense and Other Essays Gill opens with an "apology" to the reader in which he writes "Two primary ideas run through all the essays in this book: 'that art is simply the well making of what needs making' and that 'art is collaboration with God in creating.' Written at various times and for various occasions I was sometimes moved by the one sometimes by the other. One essay will appear in consequence to contradict another. This seems unavoidable but apology is offered for the gymnastics to which the reader is compelled. One of 150 copies folio size 40 pp. Eric Gill 1882-1940 English sculptor typographer illustrator and printmaker is perhaps best known for his wood engravings; his work is characterised by sensual line work and elegant characters with a deep spirituality. <br /> <br /> This volume appears to be one of the first attempts to compile Gill's work in a single volume; however per Evan Gill's bibliography it "was prepared and published entirely without Gill's knowledge and consent." p. 162. As always seeing Gill's work with the depth and texture of an engraving is so very different from seeing an offset- or digitally-printed version; this work contains a wonderful selection of his early work with his talent already in its full glory. <br /> <br /> The work contains a total of thirty-eight of Gill's engravings including those done jointly with David Jones. Note that the list is given on the Contents page but does not call out that there are two engravings on the title page and four on p. 28. <br /> <br /> ___DESCRIPTION: Bound in full natural linen cloth over boards title page in red and black with two of the thirty-eight engravings a hand-made notation in the second sentence of the title which apparently was made to all copies as other online listings have the same correction noted limitation statement following the title page issued in an edition of 150 copies this no. 83 each engraving on the rectos only vintage bookseller ticket on the rear pastedown Phillip C. Duschenes New York; binding folio size 12 1/2" by 10" pagination: ii 36 leaves 2 printed recto only. <br /> <br /> ___CONDITION: Somewhat better than very good the front board clean the corners gently bumped with the linen cloth just beginning to rub a strong square text block with solid hinges and entirely free of prior owner markings; some foxing and a small spot of soil on the back board some foxing throughout and on some pages some marks which appear to be offsetting which fortunately do not intrude upon the engravings. With over 1000 examples of Gill's work - several folding. Slight waviness to the foot of the contents and a little spotting to the edges a delightful example in a unique binding. Compiled by Gill's nephew this brings together a lifetime's work from the well known and celebrated such as his designs for the Golden Cockerel Press books to more ephemeral items such as designs for rubber stamps Christmas cards and bookplates. 19289170London: Lanston Monotype Corporation 1928. One of 55 copies of this beautifully printed issue of a lecture on sculpture given by Eric Gill at the Victoria and Albert Museum. In addition to the text Gill contributes a red device to the title page and a map of his home Piggotts on the final leaf - with a loose leaf to receive offsetting from this image clearly in place since the book was issued. Gill has signed the book on the page before the map at the end of the text choosing to date it not to the imprint but to the date of the actual lecture: 'Eric G. Dec.r 1927'. Bound in black buckram with a puncture to the lower cover which has dented but not pierced the last three leaves of the book. Spotting throughout. PROVENANCE: from the collection of a Palestinian woman living in Switzerland in the 1980s whose sister knew Eric Gill. A very good copy of a very scarce book. 1940121495London: Peace Pledge Union 1940. Corrected proof copy extensively annotated by the author. Gill's corrections in brown ink are on almost every page emending typographical errors. It is accompanied by two leaves of suggestions of manuscript corrections for the printed text listed in black ink consisting of typographical and structural alterations with ticks by Gill in brown ink matching that in the proof copy. A margin note by Gill similarly in brown ink identifies these corrections as coming from a W.W. It is possible that this is Wilfred Wellock 1879-1972 MP and active member of the Peace Pledge Union. Published in 1940 this pamphlet was the first in a series written under the general title of The Bond of Peace. Wellock wrote the third volume Money Has Destroyed Your Peace 1940. The Human Person and Society is one of Gill's final publications; published in March 1940; Gill died in November of the same year. Together 4 items: pamphlet entitled "The Human Person and Society" duodecimo pp. 21. Original cream wrappers printed in black; 2 leaves of manuscript corrections; publisher's card indicating proof copy. Housed together in a custom red cloth chemise.
