Lovely engraving on copper of Moira Gibbings by the inimitable Eric Gill 1882-1940 signed in the plate by Gill and numbered 39 of 50 in Gill's hand. Robert Gibbings took over the Golden Cockerel Press in 1924 and Gill supplied illustrations for the Press's major works "Canterbury Tales" and "Four Gospels" during Gibbings's tenure; the Gibbings were personal friends of Gill's as well. 1928118811928. Large collotype of a pencil portrait by Eric Gill signed with his monogram and dated 16.8.’28 in the print. In addition this has been signed in pencil by the artist ‘Eric G’. Image size 27 x 31 cm. on a large sheet of art card.John Gray had been a young poet and friend of Oscar Wilde in 1890s London and was rumoured to be the origin of Dorian Gray. He was a promising poet and the author of Silverpoints which was published in 1893 designed by Ricketts. Later he became a Catholic parish priest and then a canon living in surburban Edinburgh with Andre Raffalovich when he became friends with Eric Gill. Eric Gill's opinionated manifesto on typography argues that 'a good piece of lettering is as beautiful a thing to see as any sculpture or painted picture'. This essay explores the place of typography in culture and is also a moral treatise celebrating the role of craftsmanship in an industrial age.
