193821458London: Dent for Hague and Gill 1938. A first edition first printing of '25 Nudes' published by Hague and Gill Dent in 1938. A near fine book without inscriptions - some darkening to the bottom edge and a little spotting to the endpapers. In a very good - one chip to the top of the spine with a little browning to the spine - rubbing chipping and browning generally. Becoming scarce. Accompanied by a mounted and framed title page from a first edition book of '25 Nudes' above the mounted signature of Eric Gill. A beautiful set. "25 Nudes" is a controversial set of erotic engravings created by British artist Eric Gill in the early 20th century. Known for his contributions to typography and sculpture Gill's explicit depiction of the human form sparked debate due to his unconventional lifestyle and personal beliefs. The series features intricate yet explicit representations of nude figures reflecting Gill's fascination with the human body and sensuality. Despite the artistic merit the controversy surrounding Gill's private life including allegations of misconduct has led to a complex legacy. The engravings remain a testament to the intersection of art sexuality and the artist's unconventional world view. Dent for Hague and Gill unknown

118739A superb collection of Gill material A remarkable collection including the dedication copy of the From the Jerusalem Diary inscribed by the editor Mary Gill Eric Gill's widow "To Austen St B. Harrison with happy memories from M.E.G." with the Eric Gill-designed bookplate of Austen St Barbe Harrison to the front pastedown. Harrison a close personal friend of Gill 1882-1940 was the architect with whom he collaborated on the design for the Rockefeller Museum in Jerusalem. In 1934 Gill was commissioned to carve ten panels for the museum sculpt the fountain in the Central Court and carve the English Arabic and Hebrew letters of the inscriptions throughout the building. Gill's designs symbolized "the civilizations of that have most affected the history of Palestine together with the tympanum over the main entrance". The extracts from the diary he kept during his time there were published posthumously by his widow. It was preceded by an earlier version From the Palestine Diary printed by the Hague & Gill Press in 1949 of which two copies are here present. The Palestine Diary was subsequently abandoned and only a small number of copies of the aborted edition now survive. René Hague Gill's son-in-law co-founder of the Press and master printer initally printed the sheets for the Harvill Press. However "delays occurred and cancel title pages were printed . . . dated 1951 and 1952 with the imprint 'High Wycombe Hague Gill & Davey Ltd" Gill pp. 87-8. These are present here bound into copy b. Bookseller G. F. Sims later purchased the surviving sheets and had them bound up by Sangorksi & Sutcliffe. In two letters to Harrison Gill's other son-in-law and stone-carving assistant Denis Tegetmeier discusses the abandonment of the publication. Writing from Pigotts Gill's home and workshop in High Wycombe he explains that "there was an edition printed here but never bound or published and minus the illustrations . . . I think the crisis which finally overtook the Press was responsible for the failure" 2 January 1959. The shortened version of the Palestine Diary entitled From the Jerusalem Diary was finally printed in 1953 by Linotype with illustrations from photos of Gill's carvings. In Tegetmeier's second letter dated 12 February 1959 he stresses the differences between the two publications: "the edition which was hand-set & printed here has really nothing to do with that printed by Linotype which was produced privately chiefly as a display of Eric's type 'Pilgrim' which they had recently acquired. The plan for producing an edition here which was a much earlier & entirely different venture proved abortive owing to the breakup of the Press & lack of funds to finance the binding etc. No blocks for the illus. were made & it only got as far as the printing of the letterpress". Accompanying the books are several pieces of correspondence from Mary Gill to Harrison: i Christmas card 1955 featuring a photo of Gill's carving of The Good Samaritan 1938 for Coventry Hospital which was bombed in 1941; ii Christmas card 1960 featuring Joseph and the Child with iii an autograph letter signed from Mary Gill dated 21 December 1960 "I feel very much immersed in our industrial world - of 1960 - with its noise commercialism - and dangers . . . I know Eric would have hated it!"; iv poignantly an autograph letter signed from Joanna Hague Gill's daughter and wife of René Hague dated 25 July 1961 informing Harrison of her mother's death on 22 March that year: Joanna explains the delay in writing to him "I couldn't find your address among Mother's papers but Bernard Wall . . . was able to give it to me . . . I don't think he knew what a close friend you were". Together 4 works small octavo. Jerusalem Diary: 10 photogravures reproducing carvings by Eric Gill at the Rockefeller Museum courtyard.

1925112233445566785
The sole UK printing published by The Golden Cockerel Press Waltham Saint Lawrence in 1925. 2 Vols. set. Number '195' from a limited edition of only 450 copies. Illustrated with 42 woodcuts by David Jones many hand-coloured and 27 initials by Eric Gill. Bound in the publisher's cream linen and black cloth with spines lettered in gilt. Very Good or better copies with light edge wear and traces of rubbing to the black cloth as often encountered. The black cloth is notoriously fragile. Offsetting to the end-papers and some light age spotting in places. Many pages remain uncut as issued. Both copies are from the library of Eric Kennington and bear the stamp of 'Kennington Homer House Ipsden Oxon' to the front end-papers. A beautiful fine press edition of Jonathan Swift's enduring satirical 18th-century novel being the first Golden Cockerel Press book with the artist and polymath David Jones' illustrations. Many of the illustrations are hand coloured. Eric Gill provided the cuts for the Initials. The volumes are reproduced from the text of the Henry G. Bohn edition of 1864 under the careful supervision of Robert Gibbings after Hal Taylor's death in 1925. A charming production that weaves vignettes of the story's protagonist and narrator Gulliver through his several unusual voyages. Eric Kennington R.A. was an English sculptor artist and illustrator and an official war artist in both of the world wars. As a war artist Kennington specialised in depictions of the daily hardships endured by soldiers and airmen. In the inter-war years he worked mostly on portraits and a number of book illustrations. The most notable of his book illustrations were for T. E. Lawrence's Seven Pillars of Wisdom. Kennington was also a gifted sculptor best known for his 24th Division War Memorial in Battersea Park for his work on the Shakespeare Memorial Theatre in Stratford-upon-Avon and for the effigy of Lawrence at Wareham in Dorset. He resided at Homer House Ipsden for many years. Both books are protected in Mylar archival covers. A scarce set and more-so with such a wonderful association. 2026 marks the 300th anniversary of the first publication of 'Gulliver's Travels'. More images available on request. 1921118991921. An original pencil drawing with watercolour depicting St. Christopher carrying the Christ Child. Inscribed by the artist in pencil “DEAR GORDIAN THIS IS SAINT CHRISTOPHER from daddy 2.9.’21.†with a symbol of St Dominic at the top of the image. Image size 6.5 cms x 11 cms mounted and framed in an early frame. On the back of the frame is a label from The Piccadilly Gallery in 1985 stating it was sold to Barnabus McHenry that year.
A really enchanting image which Gill made for his adopted son Gordian. Eric and Mary only had daughters and after the birth of their youngest daughter Joanna in 1910 it became clear she was unable to bear any more children. In 1917 they decided to adopt one from the infants’ home in Haywards Heath. Eventually they were allowed to take the 8 month old Gordian home to foster. Although he was never legally adopted he was brought up as their son. This drawing would have been done for Gordian when he was 4 years old. unknown

They engraved political cartoons and other images for French periodicals including La Vie Parisienne. This partnership was known for creating works using gillotage a now obsolete lithographic process wherein a drawing was made on or transferred to zinc and then dusted with resin which adhered to the drawing. The resin then acted as an acid-resist when the entire plate was immersed in acid creating a relief block that could then be inked and printed from. This printing technique was popular with newspapers as it was completely compatible with blocks of type. Paris: 1877 hardcover
