The illustrations include two drawings by Elizabeth Gill engraved on wood by Eric Gill P48 and P158." <br /> <br /> A charming little book with mostly Christmas-themed text and illustrations but also with "The Story of a Boy and Girl" "The Dwarf and The Giant" "The Wicked Pirates" each of these only about a page long and towards the end of the book "Bedroom Rules" which opens with "Rise 7.30 and Dress Wash Brush Hair and clean Teeth; say Prayers turn back Bed." The final page "Note" tells us that "The Printer is in hot water for having failed to submit proofs to the authors." <br /> <br /> ___DESCRIPTION: Bound in pale grey wraps with black lettering and one of the illustrations on the front in black note that the date on the front wrap is incorrectly printed as "MCMXXI" 1921 not the correct date of 1919 small illustration on title page a total of nineteen small wood-engravings throughout; duodecimo size 6 7/8" by 4 5/8" 26 pp. <br /> <br /> ___CONDITION: Near fine the wraps clean the top corners slightly bent as the wrap extends slightly above the text block a solid text block with strong hinges the interior is clean and bright the sole prior owner marking we see a very small number written in black ink at the fore-edge bottom corner of the front free endpaper; light edgewear at the top of the wrap else fine. <br /> <br /> ___CITATION: Taylor and Sewell no. Owned by the critic and w iter Neville Braybrooke: Eric Gill was regarded as one of the greatest craftsmen of this century a typographer letter cutter and a wood engraver. His conversion to Catholicism influenced his sculpture and writings and within EMPLOYMENT Gill applies his Catholic principles to the problem of modern modes of production. PHYSICAL DESCRIPTION: Pamphlet with deep red printed wrappers incorporating overlaps and sewn to text block. Measures 17.5cm x 11cm. Front wrapper printed in distinctive Gill Sans font torn to top and bottom edges thumbnail size portion of wrapper lost. Slightly watermarked front and rear. End papers lightly spotted. Front loose end paper signed by the critic and writer 'Neville Braybrooke 1943.' Title page contains b/w engraving by the author. Remainder of leaves printed in his Perpetua & Joanna typefaces. Leaves lightly spotted throughout. 32 pp. collated and complete. Laid within is an undocumented engraving typical in style and context to those of Gill cut from another source framed in black ink by hand and pasted to a paper card. A note at the front thanks Williamson for his "unrestricted help" and he also provides the epilogue dated 1949 which includes a number of his personal wartime farming recollections "During late February I had been plowing all night by the moon and all day by the sun in order to catch up with the work. Carting and loading 200 tons of sugar-beet in a rainy autumn had kept the tractor-plow idle as labour was short in those war years. I was a teamsman too and had to feed three horses at 5.30a.m. And of course the business manager and clerk filling in forms for wood for new machinery for petrol for feeding-stuffs for seed-corn as well as the accounts in time snatched from meals and mending machinery which was always being broken. There was book-writing too in order to educate the children for my farm locally known as convalescent Home supported all who worked on it except the farmer". Scarce.
