The first edition with these illustrations limited to 1500 numbered copies signed by Gill and Tegetmeier this being #605. 4to. 136pp. Original publisher's cloth lettered in gold at the spine and with rule and decorations stamped in blue and pink to the upper and lower boards. Bevelled edges. Backstrip darkened and with a touch of occasional marking to the boards. A little light browning to the endpapers. Neat former owner bookplate to the front pastedown. A very good copy in the original cloth-covered slipcase chafed and a little marked in places and with a tanned faded and slightly chipped paper spine label. No dust wrapper called for. Publisher's brown wrappers with lettering and a cross in black on the front. A very clean and handsome copy.St. Dominic's Press was the publishing arm of the Guild of St. Joseph and St. Dominic. The Press was founded in 1916 by Hilary Douglas Clark Pepler 1878-1951 as a means to advance his ideas for social reform. Influenced by the Distributist movement of Hilaire Belloc and G. K. Chesterton Pepler joined with Eric Gill 1882-1940 and Edward Johnston 1872-1944 in a move to Ditchling Commons to establish a group of working craftsmen. Joined soon afterwards by Desmond Chute 1895-1962 and Joseph Cribb 1892-1967 who was Gill’s earliest apprentice they established the Guild of St. Joseph and St. Dominic “In order to put the affairs of the above upon a permanent basis.†Though Gill resigned in 1924 and withdrew to Capel-y-ffin to focus on his work as a stone carver the Guild lasted until 1989. Darkening to covers; light wear to extremities; a very good copy of a rare example of two original Eric Gill typefaces in a single volume. . The Perpetua typeface was designed by Eric Gill between 1925 and 1930 was his first major typeface and is used in the headings titles and short passages in this book. Gill designed the Joanna typeface in 1930–31 and named it after his daughter Joanna. This book demonstrates the potential of these three typefaces in various placements. 1991ABE-6601222683Bain & Williams London 1991 'A Typographical Masterpiece' Beautifully illustrated with works by Eric Gill including archive paste-ups proofs and photographs of the production of the Gospels. This is an account by John Dreyfus of Gill's collaboration with Robert Gibbings in producing the celebrated Golden Cockerel Press edition of 'The Four Gospels' in 1931. "Through a combination of good luck and exceptional help from librarians and collectors on both sides of the Atlantic I have been able to locate a great many documents which throw new light on what went on during the planning and production of The Four Gospels by Gibbings and Gill." This edition of only 250 copies was printed by Meridan-Stinchour Press on Superfine Paper from the Mohawk Paper Mills. The duotone photographs are by Michael Arsenault. The text was composed in Linotronic Galliard designed by Matthew Carter. Main title and chapter headings set in Golden Cockerel at the Rampant Lions Press Cambridge. Golden Cockerel device on title page engraved by Robert Gibbings. Bound in Vermont by Judi Conant the book was designed by John Dreyfus. Issued with the publisher's plain unprinted dustwrapper as issued. A similar edition was published in USA for the book club of California. This volume is still sealed and RARE thus. It is beautifully bound in red cloth with gold lettering on the spine and the design on the front board is a combination of two elements by Eric Gill. The border was designed in 1931 for an edition of Aesop's Fables but not used. The lettering is an arrangement by Gill of letters he cut for the Golden Cockerel Press in 1928.The excellent text covers Gibbings and Gill at the Golden Cockerel Press The Golden Cockerel Type Planning the Edition and Producing the Edition along with some Opinions on the Edition. There is an Epilogue and an Alphabetical list of Gill's Captions as well as an Index. The large format is 34 x 24 cm and it weighs over 1 kilo.
