19345593Paris: Editions Excelsior 1934. First Edition. Original soft covers with a dedication by Icart to the half title "To Mr Ullmann who lived among the stars this play is where they and wings are spoken of." The cover shows Don Quichotte waving to aeroplanes' wings emblems of dread and aspiration alike. Although the Spanish civil war was still two years away the image is very evocative of a squadron of bombers on their way to Guernica. Louis Icart's sole book where the artist recasts Cervantes's Don Quixote as a dramatic play. In the climactic fifth act the revived knight-errant mounts a crusade across France against modernity's vices: the gaudy worship of the Golden Calf the idolatry of Mammon and the dominion of the mean-spirited and base. The covers are in good condition with a touch of edge wear and a little creasing to the spine. Rubbing to the spine edges. Internally clean and tidy with some darkening to the pages. Some pages uncut. 252 pages. 19cm x 13.5cm. Louis Icart 1888–1950 was primarily known as a French Art Deco painter printmaker and illustrator renowned for his glamorous etchings of elegant women. . Text is in French. Icart's letters are scarce. To Leon Deffoux at Journal L'Oeuvre Paris I'm not so confused as to have made a mistake since in short you think like Pierre Varenne! In the end have you and I and all of those who love what we love not always stayed connected by that silken 'Thread of Ariadne' left in the wake of the radiant Juliette Drouet - To make it short: I won't take back my 'thank you' and I fondly shake your hand.
