187730067London: William H. Harrison 1877. Very Good. London: William H. Harrison 1877. First Edition. Octavo 18.5cm.; publisher's purple pictorial cloth designed by Florence Claxton elaborately embossed in gilt and black all edges gilt black glazed endpapers; iv5-156pp. Cloth a bit scuffed and worn along extremities with brief exposure at corners and spine ends spine cloth faded brief split to rear joint rear hinge cracked but holding textblock slightly shaken in binding else a Very Good bright example.
Inscribed on front flyleaf to the American medium "Mrs. Hollis Billing With the kind regards of The Author / November 1879. London."

Scarce collection of humorous poems and vignettes by the British author and editor of The Spiritualist. Running in the London Spiritualist circles Harrison would presumably have made the acquaintance of the inscribee American medium Mary Hollis Billing and her husband who served on the 1877 Committee of the Theosophical Society in London.

Contents only glancingly Spiritualist though true to form the imprint provides the publication date based on different calendars: A.D. 1877 Popular Chronology; A.M. 5877 Torquemada; A.M. 50800077 Huxley. Like many Spiritualists of the day Harrison was especially interested in photography and several pieces in this volume relate to the art and science of the form. Notably "The Lay of the Photographer" describes in nineteen stanzas the chemical transformations of pyroxylin iodine and silver to develop photographs. Needless to say the poem is not very good.

Advertisements for the present work attribute the cover design to British illustrator cartoonist and fringe Pre-Raphaelite Florence Claxton 1838-1920. One contemporary reviewer aptly describes the book as "handsomely-bound and griffin-guarded" Liverpool Daily Courier. William H. Harrison unknown
007866London: The Swallow Press 1975. Full leather. This is an exquisite finely bound strikingly unconventionally illustrated edition of The Sonnets by poet playwright dramatist and primus inter pares William Shakespeare. 300 copies were produced thus of which this is number 44 signed on the colophon by Robert Graves who contributes a substantive Preface Edward Burrett the book designer and Clarke Hutton the illustrator. A troika of features distinguish this copy. First is exceptional condition. Second this copy is accompanied by the original publishers prospectus and order form. Third this is a designers presentation copy evidenced by a lengthy signed and dated 1975 gift inscription by Edward Burrett and his wife Cecile on the recto of the blank preceding the half title. Edward Burrett 1909-1995 was a noted specialist and connoisseur in book design a founding member of the Society of Typographic Designers and founding proprietor of the Penmiel Press.

This large volume measures 10 x 14 inches 25.4 x 35.6 cm bound in full Niger Morocco goatskin by Sangorski and Sutcliffe the contents printed on laid paper with each of the one hundred and fifty-four Sonnets allocated a single page. The volume is housed in a felt-lined purple and gold paper-covered slipcase featuring an interlocking pattern of swallows which is mirrored on the pastedowns of the book. The Sonnets features 40 illustrations on various tinted papers by Clarke Hutton 1898-1984 one of the most eminent and influential book illustrators of his time. Hutton adds something unique to Shakespeares work which so often comes accompanied by traditional engravings rather than modernist line work. The colophon features the signatures of Robert Graves Edward Burrett and Clarke Hutton below the limitation number 44. The signatures of the book designer Edward Burrett and his wife Cecile are also found beneath their autograph gift inscription. Laid in are the large and beautifully printed publishers prospectus featuring a specimen page and extensive information about the edition. Also laid in is the publishers order form.

The volume is in truly fine condition with no appreciable wear or flaws to either the binding or contents. The slipcase remains bright and fully intact with superficial overall scuffing.

William Shakespeare 1564-1616 left a cultural and literary legacy whose continuing influence is difficult to overstate. His stature so dominates English letters that it verges on biblical proportion. To the point Shakespeare is often assumed to have been born on 23 April St. Georges Day so that Englands national poet and her patron saint share the same day of celebration akin to how Christs birthday is asserted onto the winter solstice.

Shakespeares plays are the most conspicuous aspect of his literary legacy but as Robert Graves states in his Preface Shakespeare built up a double reputation in literature; as a classic English playwright and as author of the Sonnets his profound meditations on love. In the plays we are frequently aware of Shakespeare the poet; in the Sonnets we recognize his role as dramatist. The author of the Sonnets became incomparably greater than his contemporaries precisely because he needed to see himself and his beloved in dramatic and human terms.

Robert Graves 1895-1985 was an English poet novelist critic and translator perhaps best known today as a pioneer and master of the historical fiction genre for his Claudius series compellingly fictionalizing the Roman Emperor. Born to a middle-class family with an Irish Gaelic scholar father Gravess early life shaped his love for myth and poetry even as boxing shaped his repeatedly broken nose. In 1913 he received a scholarship to study classics at St Johns College Oxford. However he did not take his place at the university until after WWI; in 1914 he enlisted almost immediately after the outbreak of war joining a regiment which included fellow war poet Siegfried Sassoon.

The Swallow Press hardcover

A copy of Sobotova's own description of this project is included and sheds some light on her process of creating this tremendous volume: "The top and back covers decorations are based on Cuevas interpretation of the story - metamorphosis of a man. There are two mirror images that appears skewed in abstract way. This design was created by cutting out the shapes in the leather after the book was covered. The depressions were filled with leather dust and painted with insect like acrylic colors." Accompanying the book is an exhibit catalogue featuring the works of both Jan and Jarmila from the Mildred Hawn Exhibition Gallery at SMU in Dallas 1995 which both artists have signed. 193042955Philadelphia 1930. Very good. Extensive custom catalogue containing metal fixtures and display equipment for hardware stores published by David Lupton's Sons a steel company based in Philadelphia. The catalogue includes suggestions for store layout providing examples of merchandise display on Lupton display cases and shelving with extensive diagrams showing the proper distribution of for example various-sized shovels on a particular shelving unit. From a stamp appearing several times throughout the album and on a piece of laid-in marketing ephemera which reads "Bowes Hardware & Plumbing 425 Danforth Ave Toronto" this particular album was almost certainly compiled by Lupton for Bowes as part of its "Store Planning Service" referred to on the album's cover. A fascinating example of the marketing and merchandizing of U.S. hardware store equipment and a glimpse into the process of starting a North American small business during the height of The Great Depression. Hardcover. Oblong 4to. album. Screw-bound leather-covered boards with publisher's text in printed in gold to front cover. Holds photos diagrams text and paint swatches all affixed to 29 dark-gray stiff leaves divided into four sections. Appears almost entirely complete with corners of several captions torn off. Album about very good overall with many affixed papers toned from age or glue-stained but all remain readable. Sound overall. Additionally laid-in are 21 clippings and advertising ephemera relating to hardware stores including several in Toronto. hardcover
36224Freeville NY: Carol Schwartzott 2007. Hard Cover. Fine in very good box. Hard Cover. 5 of 25 copies signed and numbered by the book artist. This is a particularly beautiful version of the famous Rubaiyat. In her artist's statement Schwartzott writes that as a collector of Rubaiyats she began to toy with creating her own version in 2006. "The book is divided into seven segments each separated by a divider of hand-marbled Japanese paper. The first contains the title page and introduction and the last an artist's statement bibliography and colophon. The remaining five are dedicated to the seventy-five quatrains of FitzGerald's first edition. Each contains a vellum window reminiscent of a Persian archway that opens to reveal my version of a miniature painting." Bound in light blue Japanese cloth with an intricate wood cut out to front board. The pristine interior was laser printed with archival ink onto Mohawk Via vellum and Moab Entrada paper. The prints were then finished with color pencil paint gold and silver leaf. Housed in clamshell box covered in the same cloth as the book. There is a light crease to the upper left corner of the box otherwise in fine condition. Unpaginated. ARTB/122122. Carol Schwartzott unknown

55230Berlin: Club der Kulturschaffenden "Johannes R. Becher" 1988. Slim octavo 22 × 13 cm. Original printed four-panel folder printed to recto and verso; fourfold leporello 8 pp. 30 loose leaves printed to both sides 1 folded gathering of 4 pp. all printed on coated paper with numerous reproductions of visual poetry some of which are full-page. Very good. First edition of the catalog for the first comprehensive exhibition of visual poetry in the GDR. The two curators of the exhibition the Chilean graphic designer muralist and set designer Guillermo Deisler and the graphic designer Karla Sachse met through mail art networks connecting Chile and the GDR. Following the Chilean military coup in 1973 Deisler fled into exile. Before settling permanently in the GDR he also lived for a time in France and Bulgaria. For the Mail Art artists the tradition of visual poetry was an important point of reference. Yet the interplay of text and image was not a harmless purely aesthetic one in East Germany; under the conditions of secret police surveillance Mail Art was also a strategy of creative encryption. The two curators did not exhibit the works solely out of historical interest but also out of a contemporary interest in production aesthetics. In this way prints from the Renaissance and Baroque periods were linked with futuristic Dadaist and contemporary experiments in Concrete Poetry from East and West. The loose-leaf pages of the catalog encourage the viewer to step beyond a purely historical perspective and actively try out other constellations. Here the freedom of the letters becomes for the viewer a freedom of the pages.

The focus was on contemporary visual poetry. Among those represented were: Gregorio Berchenko Julien Blaine Augusto de Campos Wladimir Dias-Pino Fria Elfen Korneliusz Francke Jesus Galdamez Ilse and Pierre Garnier Eugen Gomringer Klaus Groh Dick Higgins Kum Nam Baik Arrigo Lora-Totino the Noigandres Group Clemente PadÃn Michele Perfetti Décio Pignatari Robert Rehfeldt Ruth Wolf-Rehfeldt Ãlvaro de Sá Veselin Sariev Thomas Schulz Serge Segay Shozo Shimamoto Miroljub Todorovic Jirà Valoch and Edgardo Antonio Vigo among several others. 50117Moscow: Izdatel'stvo Kritiko-bibliograficheskogo instituta 1935. Octavos 24.5 × 17 cm. Original decorative staple-stitched self-wrappers; 40 pp. per issue. Illustrations throughout. Very good. Six issues of this monthly journal dedicated to Soviet visual culture published 1932-1936 with wrapper design by the master graphic artist Vladimir Favorsky. Illustrated with reproductions of contemporary propaganda posters and paintings with accompanying reviews the issues offer a glimpse into the editorial criteria for Soviet poster art and Socialist Realist painting in the early years of their development. Each issue opens with reviews of political posters by artists such as Gustav Klutsis whose work is discussed as departing from Socialist Realism agitational posters of Galina Shubina who is critiqued for making "too masculine" the faces of female workers and anti-religious posters by Daniil Moor whose caricatures are said to be popular with workers during collective review sessions. Reviews of art exhibitions art publications theater performances as well as publications on musical performances and the opera close each volume. Art exhibition reviews include critiques of the exhibition "Soviet Turkmenia" "Spring exhibition of Moscow painters" and the individual show of the avant-garde painter Alexandr Labas an OST member and VKhUTEMAS teacher whose work would not be exhibited after 1936. The periodical appeared under different titles in 1932-1936 including "Fine art production" "Overview of the Arts" and "Poster Art and Reproductions."

The journal was published by the Critical Bibliographic Institute established by Narkompros in 1930. The objective of the Institute was to provide critical reviews and bibliographies of all print matter published in the Soviet Union with the goal of improving the general quality of the publications. At its inception in addition to visual culture the institute published ten other industry bulletins: "Social and political literature" "Technical literature" "Children's literature" etc. Due to the broad scope of the publications the quality of the reviews began to suffer and by 1936 the publications were transferred to respective specialized institutes staffed with appropriate experts. Publishers catalog to rear wrappers. One of 1800 copies printed. A striking clearly under-studied research source on early Soviet visual culture.

As of February 2026 KVK OCLC only show two holdings in North America with scattered issues at one additional institution. unknown
55185Prague: Nákladem ÄŒeskoslovenské grafické unie A.S. v Praze 1934. Quarto 29.3 × 20.8 cm. Original staple-stitched printed wrappers; 28 pp. including wrappers. Thirteen pages with isotype graphics including two in color. Lacking the twenty-nine leaves of isotype illustrations which were apparently issued along with the pamphlet. Very good save for light rust from staples to gutter of last few leaves. KonviÄka 1900-1971 originally from near HodonÃn was a teacher and author of several works on pedagogy and schooling with a special interest in art education crafts and visual statistics. From 1928 to 1934 he was active at the Masaryk Experimental Differentiated School in ZlÃn the home of the illustrious Tomáš BaÅ¥a Shoe Company which shaped the infrastructure and culture of the entire town. The school was one of three experimental schools in Czechoslovakia which allowed students to explore various hands-on projects rather than following traditional syllabi and it had direct ties to BaÅ¥a. Derek Sayer describes the entrepreneur's ambition for the town as follows: "ZlÃn in Moravia Tomáš BaÅ¥a's company town is a show-piece of designed modern living. Its administrative building a seventeen-story skyscraper built in 1937-38 may well have been the tallest building in Europe at the time. Still more distinctive was BaÅ¥a's provision of standardized family houses and apartments for his workers and a range of social amenities from "Masaryk Schools" to hospitals to community centers. It is an eminently modernist vision which the visiting Le Corbusier for one much appreciated" Derek Sayer The Coasts of Bohemia p. 200. The building housing the progressive Masaryk Schools built in 1927-1928 after plans by FrantiÅ¡ek Lydie Gahura was also a cutting edge construction which was demolished in 1988.

In the present work KonviÄka speaks to drawing instructors at schools and outlines the basic principles of visual statistics. He discusses Otto Neurath and the Vienna Method as well as the Moscow Insitute of Visual Statistics Izostat which in its own ways applied Neurath's methods. Another figure whose work he singles out as pioneering in this field is Augustin Tschinkel. Via the Czech journal "ZemÄ› SovÄ›tů" Land of the SoÂviets various examples of Soviet Isotype illustrations have made it onto the pages of KonviÄka's book. The pamphlet apparently accompanied twenty-nine leaves of isotype illustrations which are described in detail within but are lacking here.

As of June 2025 KVK OCLC show no copies apart from the Czech National Library. unknown

194258639Washington DC: El Coordinador de Asuntos Interamericanos 1942. Poster. Good. A suite of three WWII posters 20" x 14". Each poster has been mounted to a thin cardboard. With some creasing and occasional small losses from the edges. The largest loss is from the top right corner of the "palabra" poster measuring 4" x 3". The posters also have a general layer of light glue-staining.

Three American WWII posters depicting the themes of Freedom of Worship Freedom from Want and Freedom of Speech. These posters were meant to highlight Franklin D. Roosevelt's four freedoms here three and to sway Latin American opinion against Germany Italy and Japan.

The Spanish text at the foot of each poster reads: "One of the 4 liberties for which the allies fight." Edward McKnight Kauffer 1890-1954 was an American artist and graphic designer who worked mostly in the realm of poster art. He was born in Montana however he moved to England and became an expatriate. He was very influential in Europe however he was only known in the United States by a handful of those well versed in the study of design. Interestingly despite his obscurity in America in 1937 the Museum of Modern Art gave him a prestigious one-man show. At the time of the exhibition copy agents were continuing the tradition of using posters with romantic imagery and only a few designers were able to gain any attention from breaking free of this type of imagery. Still remaining in obscurity Kauffer returned to England only returning to New York City after the war broke out in 1940. He only received honors in the United States posthumously when he finally received an AIGA award.

Russian born American artist Alexey Brodovitch 1898-1971 was most known for holding the art director's position at Harper's Bazaar fashion magazine during the years of 1934-1958. Like Kauffer Brodovitch played a significant role in introducing the United States to a substantially simplified modern design already popular in Europe. While at Harper's Brodovitch used art created by Man Ray Salvador Dali and A.M. Cassandre. Brodovitch received an AIGA award in 1987.

Three boldly modern posters created by two artists who helped pioneer the modern poster in the United States with its symbolic imagery and social relevance.
