Contemporary full vellum with handwritten title to spine. Additional engraved title by Dutch Golden Age painter and engraver Joseph Mulder 1658-1742 after a painting by Dutch Baroque era painter Gerard Hoet 1648-1733. Title vignette. Decorative initials and tailpieces. Scarce first edition of Hermann Witsius' compendium of religious works illustrated with eight full-page engravings by Jan van den Aveelen including four double-page. Six of these appear in the text on Jewish law and ritual "de Tabernaculi Levitici mysteriis" and one includes an overflap showing the Ark of the Covenant. Age-toning to binding. Ex-library sticker at head of spine and stamp on free front endpaper. Previous owner's gift inscription dated 1830 on fly leaf. Clear water-staining along fore-edge of the first two leaves of Dedication then sporadically along fore-edge of a few pages throughout 9not affecting lettering. Both hinges slightly starting. Sporadic foxing and age-toning throughout. Text in Latin with some Hebrew and Greek. Binding in overall good- to good interior in good- to very good condition. About the author: Hermann Witsius 1636-1708 was "Professor of Divinity in the Universities of Franeker Utrecht and Leyden. A brilliant and devout student he was fluent in Latin Greek and Hebrew by the age of 15 when he entered the University of Utrecht. All paper edges red. Marbled endpapers. Engraved frontispiece portrait of the author and engraved portrait of Caroline of Brandenburg-Ansbach Queen of Great Britain as the wife of King George II by George Vertue. Title vignettes. Title pages in red and black lettering. This work was originally published in London in 1619 by Paolo Sarpi 1552-1623 an Italian historian prelate scientist canon lawyer and statesman active on behalf of the Venetian Republic during the period of its successful defiance of the papal interdict 1605-1607 and its war 1615-1617 with Austria over the Uskok pirates. The author published it under the name of Pietro Soave Polano an anagram of Paolo Sarpi Veneto plus o. The book's emphasis was on the role of the Papal Curia and its slant on the Curia hostile. Sarpi's work attained such fame that the Vatican opened its archives to Cardinal Pietro Sforza Pallavicino whom it commissioned to write a three volume rebuttal entitled the "Istoria del Concilio di Trento scritta dal P. Sforza Pallavicino della Comp. di Giesù ove insieme rifiutasi con auterevoli testimonianze un Istoria falsa divolgata nello stesso argomento sotto nome di Petro Soave Polano" "The History of the Council of Trent written by P. Sforza Pallavicino of the Company of Jesus in which a false history upon the same argument put forth under the name of Petro Soave Polano is refuted by means of authoritative testimony" 1656-1657. Very fine large engravings reproducing Italian paintings by the engravers Ludwig Kuhn Peter Halm Karl von Siegl Jakob Groh Wilhelm Krauskopf and Doris Raab. 43.3 x 30.4 cm plates heavy wove paper with wide margins each plate with a tissue guard captioned in red. Six folio plates. In very good condition some of the plates and tissues have a little edgewear or minor light soiling in no case effecting the printed images. A VERY HANDSOME COLLECTION OF GERMAN ENGRAVINGS BASED ON ITALIAN RELIGIOUS ART OF THE SIXTEENTH AND SEVENTEENTH CENTURIES. The six plates included are: 1. Doris Raab 1851-1899â€”a fascinating female German engraver. The Christ with the Four Evangelistsâ€ aka â€œThe Resurrection of Our Lordâ€ after the painting in the collection of the Galleria Palatina Palazzo Pitti Florence executed in 1516 by Fra Bartolommeo. 2. Peter Halm 1854-1923. Madonna Enthroned aka Madonna and Child after a circa 1505 painting by Giovanni Bellini. 3.
