William Hamilton RA 1751 - 1801:RA Collection: People and Organisations.Born in Chelsea West London in 1751 Hamilton spent time studying in Italy before entering the Royal Academy Schools in 1769. Although he had previously studied architectural draughtsmanship he chose to pursue painting at this time. He exhibited four paintings at the Royal Academy in 1774 and by 1789 was elected as a Royal Academician. In the early part of his career Hamilton focused on portraitur but he later began to paint subjects from poetry history and the Bible.Hamilton was also employed by print galleries to illustrate popular themes and literature. His representations of Shakespearean scenes were not well-received but his rural scenes were fashionable. Perhaps the most popular of these were his illustrations to James Thomson’s The Seasons 1730. This poem describes rural Britain and reflects on the role nature plays as an intermediary between Heaven and Earth. Hamilton’s illustrations such as The Monarch Swain were published in 1797 engraved by Francesco Bartolozzi RA and P.W. Tomkins. There is a copy of the book in the Royal Academy Library. 18th Century unknown

It includes eight full-page engravings by Jan van den Aveelen including four double-page. Six of these appear in the text on Jewish law and ritual "de Tabernaculi Levitici mysteriis" and one includes an overflap showing the Ark of the Covenant. <br /> <br /> At the end of the Preface has been added a large engraved portrait of the author by Pieter van Gunst after a painting by Gerard Hoet. The portrait is dated 1700 and comes from a later edition of Witsius' "Miscellaneorum Sacrorum" published in Amsterdam and Utrecht in 1700 by Francisci Halmae François Halma.<br /> <br /> Also includes an extensive Index at rear.<br /> <br /> Minor foxing and darkening to binding. Ex-library bookplate on inside of front cover. Minor and sporadic clear water-staining at upper lower or outer margin of pages never affecting lettering. Slight rippling to pages due to damp exposure. Otherwise pages are extremely clean and white. Text in Latin with some Hebrew and Greek. Binding in overall good to very good interior in good to very good condition. About the author: Hermann Witsius 1636-1708 was "Professor of Divinity in the Universities of Franeker Utrecht and Leyden. A brilliant and devout student he was fluent in Latin Greek and Hebrew by the age of 15 when he entered the University of Utrecht. Two finely coloured lithographs one of a Turkish Sultan in military costume with the skyline of Constantinople in the background and another of lower rank perhaps issued in the period of the Crimean War. Rubbing along board edges fore corners lightly bumped. Label on spine is heavily sunned and scuffed. Text block shows light wear and foxing to deckled edges. Also foxed sparsely throughout most prominently on endpapers. Stain in gutter of first free endpaper. Small pencil annotation on page 7 indicates a typo in the text. SH consignment. Bill Bird was an American publisher best known for running the Three Mountains Press a small press that published many prominent modernists in the 1920s including Ezra Pound Ernest Hemingway James Joyce William Carlos Williams and Robert McAlmon with Ezra Pound serving as editor. Over a period of two and a half years he published 9 works. Concurrently he founded Consolidated Press Service and worked there as a journalist from 1920-1933 when he joined the New York Sun as chief foreign correspondent. Forced to flee France after the Nazi invasion he wrote articles warning of war. After WWII he moved to Tangier and was the editor of the Tangier Gazette.<br /> <br> <br /> <br> <br /> This title was among Bird's private collection having been carted by him from Paris where he stayed until 1940 to Spain Tangiers and finally back to Paris and by descent to the US. 1403491. On request I will provide a detailed list of articles included.<br />The journal was founded by William Edwin Rudge to demonstrate "the far reaching importance of the graphic arts" including art prints commercial printing wallpaper etc. Contents were eclectic covering typography book making book printing fine prints as well as the trade journal aspects of printing candy bar wrappers.8<p>Initially the publication included original prints such as the frontispiece for Vol 1 #1 Jun 1940 a two color woodcut by Hans Alexander Mueller and Vol 1 #3 December 1940 a black and white wood engraving by Paul Landacre.</p><p>By Volume 8 1953 the focus of the periodical had shifted to a trade journal.</p> William Edwin Rudge

Raoul Varin of Paris France re-created the original paintings in the mid-1920s. "The differences between Mr. Varin's paintings and the original prints were subtle. He engraved a variety of signed limited edition numbered prints . in the 1920s and 1930s. They were published by A Ackermann & Son . His views took a historical perspective . often based on extant classical works." Only 100 signed prints of the finished work were published.
