Folio (430 x 320 mm), [4], 373, [3], liii, [1]pp., printed for private circulation only in 200 copies, early armorial bookplate to front paste-down, cont. half blue morocco, marbled boards, slightly rubbed otherwise a very good copy indeed. Printed uniformly with the catalogue of books and, like that work, printed only for presentation. The map collection was an important constituent of the Royal library (Samuel Johnson recommended buying maps locally in his famous letter to Barnard); The King's Topographical Collection of around 50,000 maps, charts, prints and drawings formerly owned by George III and donated to the Library by George IV, included antiquarian drawings by William Stukeley, large collections of views by Samuel Hieronymus Grimm, the Bucklers and Edward Blore, and the drawings from Captain Cook's voyages or Robert Hay's of Egypt. It was reprinted in 2 vols. 8vo in the same year for commercial distribution. Martin, Privately Printed Books, p. 259.

255 x 180 mm. Copperprint engraving, cut, hand-coloured and dressed with several fabric fragments, some with metallic threads, metallic lace details, and ground glass. Stitched at an early date to a ruled paper mount. Later giltwood frame and glazing with framer’s label ("Collard Doreur sur bois. Versailles’", ca. 1830-40). Striking and well-preserved example of a so-called "dressed print", based on a devotional engraving of Mary Magdalene by the German engraver and publisher Martin Engelbrecht (1684-1756), dating to the mid-18th century. The materials and style of the adornments point to the 18th century, though a later reuse of older fabrics cannot be ruled out. As often, the dressing has been ingeniously applied both under and over the surface of the original engraving. The penitent Mary Magdalene has been modified by being pasted onto glazed paper, producing a dramatic black-sky background, her body is embellished with three different brocade fabrics (two with metallic threads), and the print was further enhanced with hand-colouring, some metallic lace and ground glass. The saint is characterized by her traditional attributes of a cross, a book, a myrrh jar, a straw mat, and a skull, while her left foot rests on a globe or orb. The precious clothes that were added to Mary Magdalene, who is usually just covered by her long open hair as an expression of her ascetism and atonement, almost transforms her into a celestial Mary, thus altering the meaning of the engraving. - The fashion for dressing prints existed probably from the beginning of printed illustrations themselves, though it was a widespread, predominantly female recreation, especially in nunneries and convents, during the 17th and 18th centuries. Dressed prints were often overlooked by art historians and, due to their fragile nature, are rarely preserved in such good condition.

Lithographie. 295 x 235 mm. Brustbild nach einer Zeichnung von Kriehuber (1830).
Engraving, 216 x 165 mm. Pretty view of Posillipo near Naples, removed from Thomas Salmon's "Lo stato presente di tutti i paesi, e popoli del mondo naturale, politico e morale" (Modern history or present state of all nations), vol. - Some wrinkles and traces of folds; an insignificant tear. Residue of the collection of Sir Thomas Phillipps (1792-1872).
Original watercoloured pen-and-ink drawing, trimmed to ink borders, signed and dated by Raimo. 253 x 192 mm. Matted (432 x 362 mm). Early watercoloured drawing of a grocer selling his produce in the port of Naples, at the beginning of the main pier leading up to the old lighthouse (lanterna del molo), with Vesuvius in the distance giving off a faint cloud of smoke. On the right a housewife is seen haggling with the merchant over cucumbers, while on the left a mother is handing her daughter a bunch of Welsh onions. Signed "Raimo inv. et fece 1818". - Some brownstaining, but still a very charming view.
Original watercoloured pen-and-ink drawing within ruled ink borders, sheet size 347 x 275 mm. Matted (510 x 400 mm). Charming, early watercoloured drawing of a Neapolitan street vendor of maccaroni. Unsigned and undated, but attributable by its style to the Neapolitan artist active ca. 1820 who signed some of his works "Raimo". - Margins a little dust-stained, but very attractive.
Each puzzle measures 195 x 245 mm. Each puzzle with an engraved plate mounted on thin wood, coloured by a contemporary hand and cut to form a jigsaw puzzle, with engraved caption and short description below the image. Stored in the original cardboard box with an etched and engraved sample plate for a fourth puzzle (with caption "Équité de l'empereur") on the top, coloured by a contemporary hand, and an embossed gilt-paper border. Each puzzle with the original pink paper wrap-around slip preserved. A fine and colourful set of jigsaw puzzles depicting scenes from the life of Napoleon Bonaparte. Two of the puzzles and the sample plate have the address "Ulysse Paris" engraved in the image. Each puzzle has 20 pieces: the first depicts Napoleon calmly sleeping in a chair after having given orders to his generals on the eve of the battle of Austerlitz (1 Dec. 1805); the second shows Napoleon addressing an exhausted soldier - a scene from the battle of Lodi on 10 May 1796, fought between Napoleon's forces and the Austrian rear guard commanded by Johann Beaulieu. The third puzzle shows Napoleon as merciful emperor, receiving the thankful wife and children of a Prussian lord accused of conspiracy, whom he pardoned. The puzzle matching the scene depicted on the top of the box is not included. A few pieces cracked at thin spots; box slightly defective with traces of handling and browned. A good set.
33 x 23 cm (sheet size). Gouache on paper. Heightened in gold and silver. Charming, if amateurish, anonymous representation of Napoleon Bonaparte as Consul, based on reproductions of an original portrait by the general and military painter Louis Albert Guislain Bacler d'Albe (1761-1824). The official engraved version of d'Albe's portrait by Michelangelo Mercoli the younger circulated widely in Europe and was frequently reproduced and varied. In the gouached copy at hand, Napoleon's typical bicorne hat was added, either based on the concrete model or as an original idea of the copyist. This artistically rather unhappy addition is an interesting reminder of the immediate iconicity of Napoleon's hat. The inscription "N. Bonaparte P.er Consul de la République Française" corresponds exactly to Mercoli's print. - Well preserved. With minor tears and browning to the margins.
Lithographie von drei Steinen, signiert "A. Prevost". - Sehr selten.
Large 4to (225 x 268 mm). 224 unnumbered ff. with more than 250 page-sized plant illustrations, mostly in a mixed techique of nature printing and coloured drawings. Also includes 3 coloured engraved plates and 1 tipped-in coloured lithograph. Later half calf over marbled boards with stamped title to spine. An uncommon collection of talented botanical illustrations, many based on nature prints amplified and coloured in various techniques. The plates show mainly medicinal and culinary plants (belladonna, calendula, tobacco, eggplant "from Arabia" etc.), frequently with blossoms and fruits. All plates are identified in Latin, many have additional notes in German stating the plants' flowering season and place of origin. Some plates are signed "G.F.", a fact which has suggested attribution to the Austrian naturalist Georg von Frauenfeld (1807-73), one of the leading scientists on the Novara expedition (cf. Reiss 77 [2001], lot 77). Frauenfeld himself published a book on the algae of the Dalmatian coast, illustrated by nature printing (cf. Fischer, Naturselbstdruck, no. 72). Includes three engravings and one lithograph from other botanical works. - Occasional light browning and fingerstaining; a few slight edge defects, but well preserved altogether.
Each 211 x 168 mm. In identical gilt wooden frames. A pair of atmospheric oriental genre scenes by an unidentified, but obviously professionally trained artist, masterfully capturing the light and mood: a mosque's courtyard with visitors and beggars, and a small bazaar with merchants, pedestrians, and a belly dancer within the picturesque environment of humble dwellings.
235:174 mm (size of plate), mounted on cardboard (330:250 mm).
Kupferstich. 380 x 270 mm. Brustbild des italienischen Komponisten Paër (1771-1839).
Gestochene Kupferplatte (103:133 mm).
Colour print, measuring 125:93 cm. Folded. Large-format advertising poster by the Viennese studio Hans Neumann for the renowned fashion dealer Zwieback on the Fleischmarkt in central Vienna. Hans Neumann (1888-1960) studied at the Viennese Academy of Arts and then was mainly active in Berlin until WWI. After the war, he established one of Austria's largest advertising studios with numerous employees (cf. Bernhard Denscher, Österreichische Plakatkunst 1898-1938, Vienna 1992, p. 200). In 1938, emigrated to London and later to Australia, where he founded a very successful Atelier for Graphic Design in Melbourne.
Ca. 676 x 480 mm to 755 x 523 mm. Coloured etchings on paper. Partly heightened in gold and silver. Two of the prints mounted on canvas. Rare supraporte prints from the famous publishing house Remondini, depicting four episodes from the biblical Parable of the Prodigal Son. In the sequence of the biblical narrative, the etchings with legends in Spanish and Latin show the Prodigal Son collecting his share of the inheritance from his father, the Prodigal Son leaving the parental home, the Prodigal Son being reduced to serve as a swineherd after he squandered his fortune, and the reconciliation with his father following his desperate return home. The beautiful coloured etchings are wholly Rococo in style, from the large ornamental frames to the opulent clothing of the protagonists and decor within the scenes. Embracing the timeless character of a parable, the 18th century viewers were supposed to identify with the protagonists and have their taste in Rococo ornaments met. - The house of Remondini was founded in Bassano del Grappa by the merchant Giovanni Antonio Remondini (1634-1711) and was successfully expanded by his son Giuseppe Remondini (1672-1742). Apart from prints and books, Remondini produced decorated papers for various uses and wallpapers. In the 18th and early 19th centuries, Remondini was among the largest print publishers of Italy. The supraportes with the Prodigal Son are a beautiful example of the large portfolio of the company and its international market. - With occasional stains and some foxing. The return scene shows old restorations due to water damage, leaving some areas brittle, especially in the lower margin, and causing minimal losses to the print. The departure scene shows two small defects.
Head-and-shoulders portrait, turned to the left. Watercolor on paper. 124:96 mm. A fine watercolor study, signed on the reverse by an unkown hand.
545:397 mm. Hinter Glas gerahmt.
4to. 244 (instead of 248) partly numbered engraved plates. Slightly later full calf with giltstamped red title label to sparsely gilt spine. Very rare edition of "one of the most splendidly illustrated devotional books of the period" (Jantz), containing only the engraved plates and neither the text nor the music. The "Geistreiche Gesänge und Lieder auf alle Sonntags-Evangelien und Episteln so in dem Christlichen Jahre enthalten seyn [...]" were first issued in 1725-26, which saw a reissue under the title "Das Christliche Jahr" in 1735. This title is stamped on the spine label of this copy, suggesting that the present copy is of this latter edition. The plates "represent scenes from biblical history and the lives of the saints [...] exhibit[ing] a high point of Baroque illustration" (Faber du Faur) and are mostly presented within ornamental frames decorated by emblematic vignettes. - Wants title-page. Later handwritten bibliographical note in ink to flyleaf. Hinges a little worn, small flaw at the top margin of the plate showing St. Theresa (not touching image), but otherwise very well preserved. From the library of the Viennese collector Werner Habel, with his ownership stamp to flyleaf. Faber du Faur 1146. Jantz 2379. Bäumker III, 56, 138. Wolffheim 2202. Seebass 301. Nagler XIII, 36 and IX, 418.
Gouache on paper, ca. 32 x 45 cm (sheet dimensions ca. 41.5 x 52 cm). Meticulous panoramic view of the bay, shoreline and city of Naples from Santa Lucia in the west to Mount Vesuvius in the east. The foreground shows fishing boats and other small vessels as well as a paddle steamer flying the French flag and a U.S. navy barque. - Margins tinted in grey wash, showing some light staining and a few tiny holes, caption title lettered in pink. The vividly coloured view is perfectly preserved. - Provenance: near-contemporary ink annotation on verso "Naples / Magasin de Beaux Arts / Place Cappella a Chiaja No. 6 / Sous le Palais Partanna / Tenú par Gaetano Calvi". Sold in 2015 through Holger Christoph, Bonn (sale 38, lot 411) to a German private collector and subsequently through Dobiaschofsky in Berne (2018) and Zisska in Munich (2021). A comparable, likewise unsigned example is held by the Bibliothèque nationale de France (dept. Estampes et photographie: "Napoli da Posilippo", Smith-Lesouëf 7277).
