Wrapper title in black within a decorative border. Wrapper title: A Portrait of Shakespeare by Nicholas Parr printed from the original plate with descriptive text. This is #125 of a limited edition of 250 copies. The engraver is actually Nathaniel not Nicholas Parr d. 1751 according to the Oxford DNB. The wrapper is handmade paper watermarked Fabriano Italy. The text is printed on handmade paper with an elaborate armorial watermark. Small label inside back wrapper for the Burrows Brothers Co. Cleveland Ohio probably the printer. The plate was only previously printed in 1747 for inclusion in Thomas Whincop's A List of All the Dramatic Authors with Some Account of Their Lives. Very scarce. 1924000048<p>A solid copy of this edition of reprints of 12 plates by McBey who was one of the more influential figures of the rise of etchings in the early 20th Century. The pages on this copy are moderately foxed; foxing does not affect the rectos of the tipped-in plates though a few have slightly visible stains on the versos.</p><p>Taped to the front free endpaper is a typed letter signed from McBey to Roi Partridge at Mills College from 1941 talking about a meeting while McBey was visiting the San Francisco area. Laid in are also three handwritten letters from McBey's wife Marguerite to Partridge and his wife his third wife May Ellen Fisher from 1941 and 1943 talking about photography their visits and potential future visits. Also included is a four-page prospectus for the Minton Balch edition of <em>The Etchings of James McBey</em> by Malcolm C. Salaman including list prices for the book in both its trade and limited editons with three reproductions of McBey etchings. The prospectus shows serious edge-wear not affecting the images. VG but with soiling to covers where glassine was lacking minor age toning to extremities of some pages not bad overall a tight copy that could have been stored better. The front cover is slightly cattywampus from the two extra sets of engravings being inserted in the front of the book as might be expected. Printed wraps with glassine remnants on inside flaps. 24 pp. 15 engravings etchings withing the text and two extra sets of these illustrations each set representing a different state are included only 20 such sets were issued of the overall edition of 430 copies. Text is in French. The book itself has been printed on Imperial Japon and the extra engraving printed on Imperial Japon and on Holland Van Gelder it appears from the colophon and limitation at the rear of the book. Quite rare as a result of this limited configuration. Each set of plates is wrapped in glassine and the extremities of these plates show age-toning or light soiling.
