First edition first issue with "post est" error in the Caesar medallion on page 108 of Volume II. In a lavish full brown morocco binding with five raised bands and ornate gilt stamping to spine borders on covers wide turn-ins and beautifully patterned endsheets; all edges gilt. Near Fine with a light amount of rubbing to joints spines lightly faded a scuff to the front cover of Volume II and small former owner bookplates of noted collector Abel E. Berland to the front pastedowns. Pine's Latin text was based on Talbot's 1699 edition and is remarkable for being entirely illustrated with engraved copper plates throughout the text. Comes with a prospectus which is also inscribed by the author. Pages are crisp and clean with some spotting on the end papers. Boards are faded stained and spotted. Shows wear on the edges particularly on the spine corners. Prospectus has some bent corners plus a horizontal crease.<br /> <br /> C. L. "Lanny" Baldwin was having an affair with Anais Nin when she published this book of poetry through her own press which operated from 1942-1947. Baldwin was on the receiving end of a well known scathing breakup letter which shows why she is remembered in the literary world and he is not. The engravings were done by Nin's husband. Five engravings in three columns 23.5 x 10 cms; on a single newspaper leaf 28.7 x 40.8 cm unrelated text on the verso lower margin creased with a small central tear affecting the caption no loss the image sin very good condition. Engravings from Harper's Weekly in November 1872 all centred on the quinine production in Darjeeling. Production began in the 1860s from seeds sent by the famed botanist Sir Joseph Dalton Hooker. Quinine proved indispensable to British rule in India and they invested heavily in plantations to sure up supply.The anti-malarial was vital for colonial expansion "quinine coursed through the bloodstream of empire" Townsend Middleton "Becoming after: The Lives and Politics of Quinine’s Remains" in Cultural Anthropology Vol. 36 Issue 2 pp. 282-311 2014 although probably known more to the readers of Harper's Weekly as an essential for gin and tonic. <br> <br>The five engravings: <br>Foot-Bridge over the River Rungbee <br>Buttress of Suspension Bridge over the River Teestah <br>Cinchona Succirubra Thirty Feet High signed but indecipherable <br>Native of Sikkim <br>Cane Suspension Bridge over the Great Runjeet. . On request I will provide a detailed list of articles included.<br />The journal was founded by William Edwin Rudge to demonstrate "the far reaching importance of the graphic arts" including art prints commercial printing wallpaper etc. Contents were eclectic covering typography book making book printing fine prints as well as the trade journal aspects of printing candy bar wrappers.8<p>Initially the publication included original prints such as the frontispiece for Vol 1 #1 Jun 1940 a two color woodcut by Hans Alexander Mueller and Vol 1 #3 December 1940 a black and white wood engraving by Paul Landacre.</p><p>By Volume 8 1953 the focus of the periodical had shifted to a trade journal.</p> William Edwin Rudge

In this Portuguse language reproduction of illustrated historical documents from 1557 Hans Staden 1525 - 1576 a Europen explorer and soldier describes his experiences as a prisoner living among cannibals of Brazil. Issued unbound in 10 gigantic folded leaves with horrifying engravings of cannibalism. The pages are all housed inside a paper stiff white illustrated paper folder which is housed inside of a large stiff paper slipcase with olive green spine panel titled in white and black and white illustrated side panels. The pages are clean and bright. Minor browning to spine panel and edges of folder along with a few scuff marks to front panel. Wear rubbing chipping and short tears to edges of slipcase. Browning to edges of panels of slipcase. A fascinating piece that can be appreciated for the images alone even if one is unable to read the text. 40 pages. Size: about 23 x 15 inches.
