Essex director of "I the Jury" 1958 Sid Schwartz and Len Golos with Joseph West Waggner as screenwriter. <br/><br/>Hal Erickson: "It has been alleged that 'Horror Island' was the least expensive of Universal's 1940s second features. While it certainly looks that way it remains an enjoyable outing from fade-in to fade-out. In the tradition of 'Ten Little Indians' a group of disparate types are lured to a supposedly haunted mansion on a remote island. Their 'host' is peg-legged privateer Tobias Leo Carrillo who possesses half of a valuable treasure map. The film was distributed by Cinedis but here is credited to publicity manager G. de Boissiere with their cute cat logo as a complimentary kit. <br /> <br /> Based on Michel Breitman's 1955 novel "Fortunat ou le pere adopte." During the occupation of France a drunkard poacher named Fortunat Bourvil is tasked with helping Juliette Morgan and her two children escape the Nazis. While everyone involved agrees to keep his secret feigning time spent as a semi-pro in Canada it soon becomes clear that he is clueless on the field. The first screen adaptation of "Flash Gordon" presented as a serial film in 13 chapters and starring Buster Crabbe in the titular role battling to thwart the evil schemes of Emperor Ming the Merciless portrayed by Charles B. Middleton. Followed by two sequels also in serial form "Flash Gordon's Trip to Mars" 1938 and "Flash Gordon Conquers the Universe" 1940. Remade in 1980 as a superhero space opera film directed by Mike Hodges and starring Sam J. In truth Guinness can't play a note nor can his visitors-he's a criminal mastermind holding court over a gang of thieves including the likes of punkish Peter Sellers homicidal Herbert Lom and punchdrunk Danny Green.
