Two late production states of the script for the 1945 film based on a story idea by Jack Wagner cowritten with John Steinbeck and adapted as a screenplay by Frank Butler. The release dialogue script records a print totaling 51 more feet than the censorship script. Irving Pichel directed and Dorothy Lamour J. Carrol Naish and Arturo de Cordova led the cast. Obviously little apart from Steinbeck's treatment for the film the Valentine collection included a carbon typescript may be easily identified as purely Steinbeck's work; however nothing relating to the script saw lifetime publication so even continuity scripts such as these take on some significance for Steinbeck scholars. "Amok" is an Indonesian word of Malay origin referring to people caught up in a blind rage who try to kill their enemy and do not care about whoever else gets killed in their way. From this novella and the word's meaning originates the term "running amok." <br/><br/>Set in India. <br/><br/>Yellow untitled wrappers. From the collection of NASA scientific consultant Frederick I. Ordway III with images prominently featuring Ordway production designer Harry Lange Arthur C. Clarke Stanley Kubrick and others. One photograph has Ordway's name written on the recto in silver marker. All photographs mounted on matte board as issued. <br/><br/>Ordway and Clarke began working together on matters of science fact in 1951 and Clarke personally invited him to be the factual advisor on the film. <br/><br/>Kubrick's sprawling science fiction epic traces the evolution of human intelligence under the influence of an unspecified alien force. Along with "Blade Runner" Kubrick's masterpiece forever altered the standard for visual and conceptual sophistication in science fiction and genre films. The film won two Academy Awards for best writing and cinematography and was nominated for another seven. <br/><br/>Tony Curtis and Sidney Poitier were lauded for their performances in this Academy Award winning drama in which two prisoners from a chain-gang escape. One white one African American the men originally cooperate out of necessity as they are chained to one another. However as they grow familiar with one another a deep bond and mutual respect develops between the men. <br/><br/>"The Defiant Ones" was shot on a closed set due to the then-provocative subject matter. Special screenings were orchestrated in the southern United States for integrated audiences a relatively uncommon occurrence at the time.
