Based on the thirteenth century epic poem "Nibelungenlied." Text in German. <br/><br/>Film-Kurier was the first German film journal published daily beginning in 1919. Film-Kurier's classic era lasted until 1933 when its publisher Alfred Weiner had to flee Germany because of his Jewish origins. The issues from this era remain striking to this day because they were printed using a gravure reproduction process. Each day's issue would focus on a single film. <br/><br/>9 x 11.75 inches. Full provenance available. <br/><br/>Released in France as "L'auberge rouge" and based on the famous 1831 French serial murder case the film centers around a monk Fernandel and a group of travelers who take refuge at inn in the mountains. The inn's host confesses to the monk that he serves poisoned soup to his guests in order to rob their possessions and later dig their graves. The monk tries to save the guest's lives without violating the holy secrecy of the confession. <br/><br/>An uncommon poster designed by Hans Hillmann widely acknowledged as one Germany's top graphic designers whose work consists of over 130 film posters and book designs. Hillmann was awarded in 1992 by the Art Director's Club in New York for illustration. <br/><br/>Shipping billed at cost. One with a mimeo snipe on verso for the 9th New York Film Festival the film's US premiere. <br/><br/>Bogdanovich's documentary on the life and films of he seminal director interviewing the notoriously obstinate man himself as well as some of his most famous actors notably Henry Fonda James Stewart and John Wayne. Affording the rights to the clips however exhausted the film's AFI funding resulting in the film being rarely shown and then only in non-profit venues. In 2006 Bogdanovich having been dissatisfied with the initial version re-edited and included additional interviews with actors and directors including Clint Eastwood Martin Scorsese Steven Spielberg and Walter Hill.<br/><br/>8 x 10 inches.
