One of George Cukor's final films described by Roger Ebert as a "sort of art deco journey across Europe on the Istanbul Express" wherein a bank clerk is summoned by his elderly but still youthful aunt to rescue her lover Mr. Visconti who is being held for ransom in the Turkey. Merging the early 1970s with high British culture the film explores marijuana hippies brothels paramours fancy trains gigolos and a preference for journey over destination. <br/><br/>Goldenrod titled wrappers dated February 25 1972 with credits for screenwriters Wheeler and Allen and for director Cukor. 109 leaves mechanical duplication. Brief annotations in holograph ink throughout. More than 150 leaves of correspondence and notes. <br/><br/>A glimpse inside the behind-the-scenes process of French press and the attention paid to prolific French figures of cinema notably Rene Clair. Maryse Martin whose film credits include "The Happy Road" 1957 "Bonjour Tristesse 1958 and several films each for directors Jacqueline Audry Maurice Labro and Jean Gourguet was a popular "B" actress who played supporting roles in over 40 films. She presumably worked for a press agency involved in publication of film reviews press kits photographs and more. Several letters are represented addressed to and from Maryse from persons like Gay-Lussac Gordon Reid A. Sergio Berrocal George L. The collection both predates and postdates November 1 1961 generally considered the original release. <br/><br/>A small invitation "for two" doubles as a folding RSVP for the October 17 showing at the Cyrano theatre in Villeneuve-sur-Lot a Southwest France commune with the Lot River running through the middle. The invitee's RSVP is unsigned. The two remaining pieces are from a slightly later November 15 1961 showing at the Gaumont-Palace in Nice in the Southeast of France the Riviera. A folding invitation stamped in blind with the theatre's coat of arms credits the president of the Societe Nouvelle des Etablissements Gaumont Jean Le Duc suggests formal wear and the invitee has inscribed in holograph blue ink in French "one chair." A large program accompanies printed by Havas for the Gaumont-Palace showing details film credits and synopsis greetings from the Gaumont and advertisements for businesses in Nice. Clair is seen with fans giving a speech signing autographs conducting a recorded interview and cavorting with stars of the film like Colette Castel Alfred Adam and Annie Fratellini. The festivities seem to take place in a large music hall with musicians and traditional instruments appearing in a few photos. Bourvil is also present in two contact prints seen traveling cavorting with Clair getting a shave and playing bocce. Also included is a vintage Cinedis manila mailing envelope.<br/><br/>Limot's action photographs are poignantly interlaced with on-the-set images including tender exchanged between actors Bourvil Annie Fratellini and Colette Castel herself seen in striking authority behind a handheld camera. Housed in an original Cinedis manila envelope with French film title in holograph pencil on the front.<br/><br/>In an imaginary village on the border between Italy and France a French customs agent Fernandel watches every move of an Italian smuggler Toto who eventually discovers that the agent is Italian not French. Faldini did not appear in this film but collaborated with Toto on eight earlier films including "Toto and the Women" 1952 and "Dov'e la liberta." 1954. <br/><br/>Shot on location in Italy. 1970139880Los Angeles: Twentieth Century-Fox 1970. Vintage US one sheet poster for the 1970 US-Japanese film. The film won an Academy Award for Best Visual Effects.Several screenwriters were employed to write the script including Larry Forrester and Mitchell Lindemann for the American scenes and Hideo Oguni Ryuzo Kikushima and Akira Kurosawa for the Japanese scenes. Kurosawa was excited to direct the Japanese scenes once he heard that David Lean "Great Expectations" 1946 "The Bridge on the River Kwai" 1957 and "Lawrence of Arabia" 1962 was going to direct the American scenes. Lean was never a involved to begin with and Kurosawa successfully left the project and received no screenwriting or directorial credit. <br/><br/>Based on a nonfiction piece by Gordon Prange first published under the same name in Reader's Digest and later expanded into a book titled "At Dawn We Slept: The Untold Story Of Pearl Harbor." <br/><br/>Notable primarily for the enormous price tag attached to its production the film recreated the events leading up to the Japanese attack on Pear Harbor. American and Japanese filmmakers collaborated on the World War two picture which was far more successful in Japan than in the US.
